Chastain Park,

This review is from: James Brown: Live in Concert - 13 Greatest Hits (DVD)
Actually, the concert was release originally in 1985, probably recorded in 1984. The CD version of this concert has to be the most recorded CD on different labels of all time. For some reason, no one has the copyright or someone is selling it to everyone. I personally have seen about 50 different versions of this concert on CD and there are probably well over 100. Sometimes the track list is the same as the concert, sometimes they change the songs around, sometimes they leave some of the songs, other times they add 'Sex Machine' and/or 'Body Heat' from LIVE IN NY 1980 to fool us JB fans!!
The concert was good. Mr. Brown was getting near the end of the times he would do the splits. You can see it was getting harder for him at age 51 or 52. Just a year od so earlier IN 1982 OR 1983 he was able to do them much better in the DVD concert JAMES BROWN AT THE BEVERLY WITH B. B. KING.

Live at Chastain Park - The Awful Edition,

This review is from: James Brown - Live at Chastain Park (DVD)
I've been looking for a decent JB live performance quite some time now. This one is not it. The video quality looks like it's from the late 60s and sound is non-existent. I have a couple of CDs of the same show. The awful sound made me think of playing the DVD with audio off and listening to the record at the same time. The horn section can only be heard if they solo into Mr. Brown's mike. Directing is bad, too. Everybody knows that a James Brown show is not just about Mr. Brown himself but his band, too. This time, the band is shown during solos and even then barely. It's Brown only who, too, seems somewhat restrained. I've seen him live twice in 2004 and 2006 and the DVD doesn't come close. He probably was more occupied with the cameras trained on him. Someone has edited a great deal of the show out of the production as well, making it feel really empty. If anyone can recommend a recording of a recent show, I'd be really grateful. It probably defeats this DVD one hand in the pocket.

This DVD was a disappointment mainly because the sound quality was so inferior. Watching this DVD the only way I can tell if the horn section is playing is if the camera shows them with horns to mouth. The performance features James Brown's voice, strong bass guitar, and drums-little else is heard with any clarity.

James Brown--Brotha' Please!,

This review is from: James Brown - Live at Chastain Park (DVD)
I saw this DVD at a friends house on New Years Eve. The lot of us circled the tv set expecting just a routine show. The Man went into unforgettable renditions of fan favorites including "Sex Machine" and "The Payback". A highlight for us was the 10 minute "It's A Man' Man's World". We felt it when he belted out the lyric, we felt it when he screamed, we felt it when he said absolutely nothing. You will lose track of time with this one! A total interactive experience.

It is hard to find any of James Browns' concerts rated high, usually due to poor video or audio. I took a chance with this one and am very pleased. Not high quality video like today's but DEFINITELY worth having. I played this at work for some older than 40 "brothers" and they went wild. They talked about JB's foot work, his music, clothes(and capes),and his cooking band, including Maceo Parker on sax. This concert was performed in 1985 when James Brown was 52.

This DVD really shows why James Brown was crowned Soul Brother #1the God Father of Soul, I just wish he had done some of his other hit songs or maybe there will be another release, but i can honestly say whoever buys this DVD will not be disappointed.

I AGREE WITH SOME OF THE OTHER REVIEWS THAT DID NOT LIKE IT. THE BAND WAS TOO LOUD THAT IT OVERSHADOWED JAMES BROWN. I REALLY ENJOY HIS MUSIC ON CD BUT THIS VIDEO IS HALF BAKED. I COULD HARDLY HEAR JAMES BROWN AND BESIDES HE NEVER SANG A WHOLE SONG, ONLY PARTS AND A LOT OF FILLING IN WITH GROWNS. TOO BAD, I WISH I HAD LISTEN TO HE BAD REVIEWS NOT THE GOOD ONES (THESE ARE PROBALY-DIE HARDS).
