Superb Dean tv performances - a must-own,
By
This review is from: James Dean Era (DVD)
Three of Dean's half hour tv dramas are presented here with lots of extras. I AM A FOOL and THE UNLIGHTED ROAD are well known but SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE is a find- thought lost and not seen for half a century.Dean is brilliant in these three very different performances, giving us a kaleidoscope of what he was capable of. He is vulnerable and yearning in I AM A FOOL, confident but sensitive in THE UNLIGHTED ROAD, and macho/sexy in BRIEFCASE. In fact, his performance in the latter makes one wish he had played Liliom or Billy Bigelow (LILIOM/CAROUSEL) - it's a case study for the perfect interpretation of that role. Dean was incredibly sexy and incredibly talented - his talent as displayed in the dozens of tv dramas he appeared in showcase his abilities far more than the three released Hollywood films. Any fan of Dean's must collect these performances - there are a number of them out there on DVD and VHS: HARVEST, THE BELLS OF COCKAIGNE, HILL NUMBER ONE; I AM A FOOL; THE UNLIGHTED ROAD; SOMETHING FOR AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE; LONG TIME TILL DAWN; ABRAHAM LINCOLN, etc. This is a must-own rarity DVD for every Dean fan.

Hawkwind - 'Night Of The Hawks' (MVD) 4 1/2 stars,
By
This review is from: Hawkwind: Night of the Hawks (DVD)
Originally had this show on VHS, but of course it's great to have it now on DVD. 'Night...' was recorded in spring, 1984 at the Gaumont Theatre in Ipswich, UK. Picture and sound quality is pretty good. At least with a DVD, I won't have to concern myself with the color fading. I thought it was interesting how co-founder Nik Turner was allowed to return to Hawkwind, as I noticed that Dave Brock allows Turner to be the frontman and focal point through out the entire hour long concert here. Tunes I more than thoroughly 'soaked in' here were "Ghost Dance" ( a different version than most others), the futuristic "Watching The Grass Grow", "Ejection", my two favorites here "Ejection" and "Uncle Sams on Mars" as well as "Sonic Attack" "Psi Power" (where Brock steps out to provide the lead vocals) and the stunning encore of "Silver Machine". Well done. Recommended.

LOGO WARNING!!!!!,

I agree this set contains a great selection of material. I'm pleased with the DVD quality. But, unfortunately, there is a "Stardust Records" logo 3 times during Something For An Empty Briefcase. None of the other material has this logo. Had I known this, I would not have purchased this set. I must deduct one star for this desecreation of an otherwise great set.

This is a best dvd on James Dean I've seen!
More of the three tv short films one cd with best rock 'n' roll era songs, maybe some liked at Jimmy, to deep in the world of the magic fifteens...to dream of still being at that time and maybe meet james dean! Delicious menu style, insights on the commercials that have produced and presented the three short tv films and the two famous spots: one just begun his career and the other sadly the last. A unique item for all fans, look for it and take it!!

Brings you music popular in the time of James Dean as well as some of his own impromptu bongo playing. Most James Dean fans will enjoy adding this to their collection.

This is a little gem of a DVD/CD thingy, It has three tv shows starring Jimmy one of which has never been seen before (ever by anyone i think...and as mine is the first review than maybe i am the only one...god i feel special) it also has veritable platter of lovely extras. The CD thingy is almost as pretty as the DVD thingy it has funky little intros from Elvis, some guy and a racist, the only problem being that they are not full versions of the songs and like most of the women in my life fade out just as im getting excited. Its still quite good in the car though ( the CD thingy I mean )Something for an empty briefcase is the long lost film ( God knows how they lost it all I did was put James dean in a search engine and i found it) Its one of the better of Jimmys early works, about a guy who wants to go straight with the help of a woman ( never one to be type cast our Jim ) but its a cake style treat as Jimmy really seems to be enjoying himself and isnt as broody as some of his roles, I like it and i have great taste (presently im wearing a really nice t-shirt my mum bought). The extras on the disk are really short but really sweet, like a box of nice chocolates except not fattening, they include outakes from East of eden, trailers secret recordings of Jimmy on acting some racecourse footage and someother stuff i cant remember, all this and a chewy caramel centre. In summary you should buy this cous i think it is good and for once it doesnt have tony curtis introducing it, and as a special treat the CD thingy has a ghostly recording of Jimmy on the |
