Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Written by the well-known music critic, William Mann -- with an introduction by James Galway -- this scholarly, informative, yet lively and dynamic overview of Western music -- from primitive imitation of the rhythms of nature to the complex subtleties of the 20th century -- is designed especially for those with little or no familiarity with the subject.

Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Lavishly illustrated, this three-decade-old book serves as a wonderful and highly informative introduction to the classical music world and its people. James Galway hosted the PBS television series for which the book served as a companion; his photo appears on the cover, but the book itself was written by William Mann, chief music critic at the Times of London (died 1989). Highly praised by the British press upon publication, it's most definitely worth picking up if you find a well-maintained copy in a used bookstore.

If you order it through Amazon, however, be careful. Needing to replace my old copy, I ordered ISBN 013509240X, which Amazon lists as hardcover; however, the one I received with that ISBN, from an Amazon marketplace seller, is softcover. The hardcover version I'm now holding in my hand, which Amazon correctly lists as hardcover, is ISBN 0810913429.
