Grade 5-8-A book on stamp collecting and dinosaurs? The idea's not so far-fetched when the stamps were specially designed for the United States Postal Service by James Gurney of Dinotopia fame. This book presents the story of the development of the popular 15 stamps as well as the life histories of the creatures they feature. First, Gurney describes how he created the stamps, complete with samples of his initial sketches. Next, two-page spreads introduce each of the reptiles, presenting new facts and multiple illustrations, including insets of the stamps, different paintings of the animals, and full-color photos of fossils. There is a section on similar stamps from other countries, a basic introduction to dinosaurs, and a U.S. map showing where various fossils have been discovered. Occasionally the book seems limited by sticking to the confines of what's on Gurney's stamps, but otherwise this eclectic and enthusiastic mix of subjects works.
