Gr. 5-8. This serviceable biography from the America's Founding Fathers series introduces James Madison. After a few pages on Madison's youth, Kent sets the scene by describing the political background of the colonies in the 1760s and 1770s. The main discussion provides some insight into Madison's private life, but focuses more on his roles in promoting the American Revolution, writing the Constitution, and serving his country as congressman, secretary of state, and president. Kent organizes the information well and presents it clearly. Illustrations include black-and-white reproductions of period portraits, other paintings, and prints. Chapter notes provide sources for the many quotes used throughout the book and sometimes featured in sidebars. The book concludes with a time line, a glossary, and lists of recommended books, places to visit, and Web sites.
