Gr 7-9--This admiring biography emphasizes Madison's intellectual and public-service contributions to the young American nation. Malone includes some personal information about her subject's childhood, education, and marriage to Dolley Paine Todd, but devotes most of the book to his political career. She relates Madison's increasingly important roles in government, from his early service in the Virginia House of Delegates to his major contributions to the drafting and ratification of the Constitution to his service as Jefferson's Secretary of State and two terms as president. His professional successes and failures are handled objectively; the author also examines his ownership of slaves and his struggles with the issue of slavery. Average-quality black-and-white photos and reproductions of period art and source documents appear throughout. While there are many YA titles about American leaders such as Washington and Jefferson, there is little to be found on the Father of the Constitution for this age group. This book provides a greater level of detail and more analysis than can be found in collective biographies, making it a good choice for libraries that need material about this man or early America.
