This is an obvouisly well researched book on James Madison. It is not a traditonal biography that discusses every event of Madison's life from birth to death as David McCollough or Ron Chernow would write. It focuses more on Madisons views on issues with the constitution, War of !812, the Presidency, etc. This book is more for the academic or scholar than for the general history reader like myself. I did find informative the sections on Madison's view on religion and slavery. This book would be a nice addition to someone's collection on the founders who is reseaching this time period.

This is an interesting review on Madison's points of view with their origins and his legacy and effect on modern american politics and commercial tactics and strategy. I would recommend its lecture with an open mind and keeping in perspective current events. Commercial embargo s and dealing with pirates off the Africa coast appear to be issues as old as the founding of the Republic.

The information in this book is separated into seven different parts:

1. Religion and Revolution
2. A Republican Constitution
3. From Ratification to the Bill of Rights
4. The Origin of the Party Systems
5. The Politics of Charm and the Limits of Democracy
6. A Founder as Commander in Chief
7. Slavery, Sectionalism, and the Decline of the Old Dominion

There is some good information on Madison in this book but the reading was more tedious at times than pleasurable.
