I must admit that I was so anxious to get my hands on this trustworthy Bible translation straight from the correct Hebrew and Greek back in January. But when I listened to it, the value of this product started to fade due to marginal acting, frequent error, and distracting background music. The Old Testament has the "voice of God" (also known as Scourby's voice manipulated via computer technology), but portions of his recording are wearing out, therefore making his 'voice' hard to percieve -- the music is too loud. The book of Leviticus is by far the worst in the collection because you can't hear the voice half the time and the repetitive music is an intense distraction. Yet, Leviticus is one of the most important books in the Law of Moses! During the portion in the book of Genesis when Noah's generation is spoken of, the words 'after the flood' were accidently eliminated. To make matters worse, the New Testament is not free of error. The words 'bewrayeth' and 'betrayeth' have different meaning. Sound effects are too repetitive. Overall, this is a nice production, but not worth [money]. I'm gonna sell it as soon as I can for a low, budget price. If you're looking for a perfectly done King James dramatization, don't expect to find it here. I'd reccommend the original, voice-only narration from Scourby or perhaps another reader. (I edited this review because I thought my previous one wasn't clear enough.)

It's "dramatized" with distracting sound effects and music.,

If you were expecting a simple, dignified reading of the King James Version, this isn't it. The 62 audio CD set is "dramatized" with distracting sound effects and music. This dramatization isn't stated in the product description. If it were mentioned, I wouldn't have bought it; I'm returning it immediately. Alexander Scourby's original reading has been spoiled. For example, they added the "Voice of God" and animal sounds in the first chapter of Genesis. There is music also. This is contrary to the jacket description of "no musical background". World Publishing, what have you done? The simple reading of Scripture can't be enhanced. Is there a CD set available with reading only? That's what I wanted.

I felt this was an excellent set! The dramatization adds reality to the scriptures. It's not over powering or anything. It's the true King James Version too, unlike when television shows portray biblical stories, they use other versions or half scriptures. My only complaint is Alexander Scourby reads a little too fast sometimes so I miss certain words. All in all it's worth the investment. It would definitely inspire teens and other youth to listen to the bible. It's like listening to a play.

I have owned Scourby's _The Spoken Word_ for about 25 years. Listening to his smooth, unbroken reading of the Holy Bible has always been a blessing to me. Many kinds of people would benefit from and enjoy this item. And the price has come down (considerably) over the years. A must for every true Bible-lover.

Excellent Shakespearian Voice reading God's Holy Word!,
This review is from: King James Version Alexander Scourby Bible Dramatized: 62 CDs with Black Nylon Zipper Pack (Audio CD)
Listening to Alexander Scourby read the Word of God is like listening to one of the 20th Century's Greatest Voice actors in a class with James Earl Jones and other British Vocal Actors. You will feel the readings and understand them better as you get into the holy dramas and holy scripts of God's Word. Nothing else can touch this.

Alexander Scourby was NOT British or a dramatist, despite what you may read above! He was a first-generation Greek-American born in Brooklyn in 1913. However, he was a serious Shakespearean actor for a while, and this influenced his professional diction. He didn't always use this standard narrator voice; he was a man of many vocal talents. He was particularly good at doing Russians or vaguely East European types (vide his character in 'The Big Heat'). Personally he seems to have been very devoted to the cause of books for the blind, which led to his first version of the recorded Bible. This edition is a repackaging of his second Bible reading, done in the 1950s.

BEING A RELAATIVE NEWCOME TO AUDIO BOOKS, I found this one extremely disconcertin. There is NO usage of today's computer technolgy. I had assumed I would be able to search in many ways. Nothing like this exists.I assumed (you know the saying about the word assume!) that the CD set would have much more flexibility. To make matters worse the titles on the CD's are in no way indicative of the contents of that CD. On the positive side (the only reason for a 3 rating), I loved listening to the voice of Scourby. If you are just looking for a simple audio version of the Bible this may be for you, although the price seems very high for what you get. |
