5.0 out of 5 stars Premier Personal Reading KJV Bible, March 10, 2006
By

With the plethora of study material now available to any student of any level of learning, a "study" Bible is a little obsolete. Space constraints in study Bibles require limited notes on even very important subjects and no notes at all on many others. It is also virtually impossible for the compiler of the study Bible to avoid personal slants and interpretations in his or her notes.

These considerations suggest an alternative approach to the Bible student's library, i.e. a good "plain" Bible for reading and a separate collection of excellent reference material for study.

The Cambridge KJV Large Print Bible in French Morocco Leather perfectly meets the need for a good reading Bible. The print is well-sized for easy reading and avoiding eye fatigue. The book itself is kept to a manageable size making carrying it to church or other meetings a pleasure rather than a chore. The binding, cover, and fit and finish is of the high quality for which Cambridge is famous. This Bible can be expected to give years of pleasurable service.

An excellent value for the student, pastor or ordinary Christian seeking a good quality KJV Bible just for reading and enjoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice., November 7, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
bought it for the old man, he says he likes it a lot. the large print for easy reading, and the leather makes it feel like it was right out of a well kept church. so if you're looking for something classy for people with vision problems, well then this is the book you probably want. I don't agree with or like the religion, but the books is nicely presented and my father seems to appreciate the quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of all my Bibles, this is my personal favorite, May 8, 2006
This review is from: King James Version Large Print Text Bible (BurgundyFrench Morocco Leather) [LARGE PRINT] (Leather Bound)
I own multiple translations and editions of the Bible, but this Cambridge Large-Print KJV is my favorite. I'm not sure what the book photo on the Amazon page is supposed to represent. A version of the box it comes in? The box mine came in is a solid gold box with red and black print. The Bible itself is lovely red Moroccan leather with "Holy Bible" stenciled simply on the front and spine. This and THE NEW OXFORD ANNOTATED BIBLE edition of the New Revised Standard Version are the two translations I use by far the most. In studying the Gospels I frequently consult THE SYNOPSIS OF THE FOUR GOSPELS in the RSV version as edited by Kurt Aland, which arranges the four gospels in parallel and which I consider an essential study tool. But for sheer joy of reading the Bible I prefer this KJV over all other versions.

The King James Version is widely reviled as inaccurate, but in fact it is a highly accurate translation of a flawed original. The New Testament translators, for instance, worked off the Greek New Testament edited by Erasmus. Though a great religious humanist, Erasmus did not produce a great text, consulting only six Greek manuscripts in compiling his edition. Today, of course, scholars are able to consult a host of Greek manuscripts--both manuscripts of the NT books as well as ancient manuscripts quoting scripture--in compiling the finest possible texts. But the truth is that while accuracy is a great thing, the Erasmus text resulted in fewer misreadings than one might expect.

The main reason to read the KJV, however, is its great beauty. Some have argued, and with some justification, that the KJV distorts the nature of the Greek texts, creating a "high" translation of what was a "low" original. In the Gospels, there is considerable justification in this. The various letters, however, especially those of Paul, show someone who was highly educated and conversant with the rhetorical models of the time. The "high" translations were in these cases justified. But the KJV is hardly alone in cleaning up the language of the gospels and making it more sophisticated. Virtually all translations do this, perhaps the Today's English Version less than any of them (a remarkable and underrated translation). Still, there is a beauty and familiarity with the KJV that no other translation can come close to matching.

What I love about this particular edition is the beauty of the text on the page and the comfort of the book in my hand. Too many Bibles cram too much text onto each page, rendering it hard on the eye. The words on these pages are clear, distinct, and welcoming. I love the simple, clean, and unadorned nature of the pages and do not miss the lack of critical apparatus to aid in reading it. When I want maps and other aides I go to the OXFORD ANNOTATED.

I strongly recommend this particular edition to anyone wanting a beautiful yet plain edition of the King James Version. I have not seen the hardback edition, but I can completely vouch for the leather.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy on the eyes, April 10, 2007
By
This is a very high quality Bible. The French Morocco leather cover is thick, yet soft and pliable. The pages were not stuck together like most Bibles when they're new. Large type is dark and extremely easy to read. Self-pronouncing text on difficult names and places is not distracting. Amazingly, this Bible isn't very heavy. The paper quality is nice, but if you use highlighters you'll want to use the dry kind to avoid bleed through. Great Bible at a great price for those looking for text-only Bible.

This has to be the most beautiful bible that I have had the pleasure to use. It is comfortable to hold, with the pages staying open when reading. The pages are crisp and clear with no clutter. This text only edition has the added advantage of no footnotes or cross references to distract the reader.
Again, this is a very well made Bible that is a great pleasure to read. And best of all its a KJV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, June 20, 2001
The King James Version is undoubtedly the best translation of the Bible. It is the most accurate, divinely inspired and anointed version. The very fact that it has been around for 400 years and even today continues to outsell the newer and more scholarly versions speaks volumes for it.You can easily see it's accuracy by comparing it with other versions verse by verse.Try it and prove it yourself! At the time the King James version was translated the English language was at the height of it's beauty and power of expression.Important shades of meaning which are essential to a proper understanding of the scriptures can be totally lost in other translations. Once you are a little familiar with the old english there's absolutely no difficulty in understanding it. You can also keep a modern translation handy just in case you have a problem understanding some difficult verses.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that should be read before it is reviewed..., September 19, 2002
By A Customer
One of the wonderful things about this book is that it comes with these caveats: "But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised...for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him." - 1 Corinthians 2:14, Hebrews 11:6b.

Until a reviewer appreciates fully who the author is, that reviewer cannot fully comprehend the text, as the book itself says, "the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." - 1 Corinthians 1:18

This book requires illumination to be properly understood. Some of these gentle reviewers seem to have read the book without the required illumination; the Author explains "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." - John 8:12b. Writing a review about a book you have only partially read -- and that much in total darkness -- well, let's just say that such a review is worth as much as was put into it.

"In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son [Jesus Christ], whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe." - Hebrews 1:1,2. This book claims to be God's message to you and I, as such, I exhort any who read this - Isn't such a claim worth a honest read?

5.0 out of 5 stars Matches Cameo Coat Pocket NT, January 10, 2006

There are many features to commend the KJV Large Print Bible, but I personally appreciate the fact that its pagination matches that of the Cameo Coat Pocket New Testament. Thus, you do not have to become separately familiar with one Bible in your personal study and another New Testament to carry with you and use for memory work.
