I was a quite disappointed after reading Dell Deaton's "James Bond Watches Price Guide 2011":1. Price: I felt the price was too high for the content delivered. A better price for this book could have been $1.99 (maybe $2.99) rather than $9.75 considering you need to go to Dell Deaton's external website to view the watch pictures. Had he put the watch photos, which are nice by the way, in the book itself, that would have been much, much better as one could then easily reference a photo for a given watch. 2. Photos not in the book but on external links. See point #1. 3. There were links to articles on Dell's website. The articles on the website were fantastic but available free, no need to have purchased the book. It would have been much nicer to have included the full articles in the book text itself. 4. Could have had more detailed photos of the watches themselves. Front, back, sides. Better descriptions, what differentiates the watch in the movie from other watches or from one another in the different movies. Watch specifications would have been nice also. Dell considers himself the expert on James Bond watches but the book falls quite short in watch specs and photos. 5. Photos from the movie itself where the watch was worn would have been great. In example, a photo of Sean Connery wearing the Rolex 6538, etc... or of Roger Moore wearing one of the many Seiko's or Rolex's as he did. 6. Photos of all watches described would have been nice, not just some. Again, no photos of the Rolex 6538. 7. Although the book is titled James Bond Watches, there should have been a section in the book that shows watches that other characters wore in the films, such as Red Grant's "Garrote" wristwatch in the movie "From Russia With Love". 8. Price listings were listings of many individual auctions, which was great, but no high and low price was given for each specific model nor was an average given. This type of information would have been much more useful for quick referencing of a price range or high/low values on a particular model when shopping around. An all time high/low and average along with an average and high/low price within the last year or last 6 months would have been quite useful as well. Even a line chart showing price trends would have been a nice touch. After all, this is a price guide. 9. There were a few mistakes in the book as well when referring to certain terms. Multiple times in the book when referring to Seiko's LCD watches, Dell describes them as Liquid Crystal Diode when in fact LCD is Liquid Crystal Display. In many sections Dell also refers to the word "providence" when instead it should be "provenance". Providence is a city in Rhode Island. "Provenance" which refers to the chronology of ownership or documented history of a particular object such as a collectible wristwatch is what Dell should have been referencing. All in all, I felt that all of the above should have been included in the book for a price of $9.75. Had the book been priced at $1.99 or maybe $2.99 as it stands, I would have given it a better review. Had the book had all the content I refer to above at its current price, I would have also given it a much better review. As the book stands though, I feel it was very overpriced. As a James Bond fan, watch collector for over 20 years now, and watch enthusiast, I sincerely hope you find my review useful before making your purchase. Thanks, Richard

Watch enthusiasts are a unique bunch: either one gets it or they don't. And that's fine as far as this reviewer is concerned, because Deaton's book is solely for the watch enthusiast. A watch enthusiast appreciates the fine details of a watch's movement, it's dial, bezel and strap. They know the difference between a Rolex and a Citizen. They also know the difference between a Daytona and a Pre-Daytona. And now, they'll know every single model worn by 007 and his creator, Ian Fleming.Complete with links to images and further information, Deaton's James Bond Watch Price Guide 2011 has everything one needs to know about wrist wear related to Bond. Well researched and referenced, this guide provides every detail one needs to discern which watch their favorite 007 wore and how to find it. Plus, prices paid are included (I can't imagine the research that went into this bit) so one can expect how long to save up for one of these beauties. This is a book to pour over and save, so that when a reader attains the wealth needed to sport a high-profile timepiece, they need go no further than this excellent resource.

I would like to congratulate Mr Dell Deaton on this book.I believe that it is quite unique and as far as I know, has not been done before? Well done, Mr Deaton! I learned quite a few things and found it very interesting that now most of the watches worn by James Bond have been identified. I found particularly interesting, the sections about the Seiko watches, especially the fact that Seiko allowed Mr Deaton access to their records to positively identify the watches used in the Roger Moore films. If you have an interest in the watches worn by James Bond, then this book may well be for you? I recommend it! Once more, very, very well done, Mr Deaton! |
