This is especially perfect for the self taught musician who has felt like he or she needs to learn how to apply music theory, so as to understand and execute true concepts of chord and scale applications.
I'm still continuing to watch and listen to this DVD over and over, even when doing house chores. You'd be surprised how much you really need to know, and will learn quickly what to practice on.
Jamie's lesson has put new life into my music creating desires, and I'll forever be greatful to have discovered his methods.
THANKS A MILLION JAMIE.

Aebersold explains music theory in a practical way. He uses a piano for the examples because it is the best way for him to teach and for us to learn the lessons; however, the viewer doesn't need to play piano. Once the lessons are heard it is obvious that they applied to almost all instruments. I like the simple way he explains the seven MODES. If you have never studied an Aebersold lesson, this is where to start. The following is copied from [...]

This nearly two-hour long DVD features Jamey at the piano explaining and demonstrating the fundamental techniques used by all great jazz improvisors. Topics covered include chord/scale relationships, keeping your place, patterns, the blues and pentatonic scales and their application, what and how to practice, articulation, memorizing songs, and much more. This DVD not only provides the technical information essential to getting started on improvisation but also serves as an overview of the entire creative process in terms that even a non-musician could understand. Jamey also provides much needed motivational material and discusses the philosophy of man's need to be creative. A complete presentation!

This DVD is closely aligned with the world famous Volume 1 How to Play Jazz and Improvise Volume 1 -- Includes CD and Volume 24 Learn to Improvise Jazz Volume 24: Major & Minor in Every Key For All Instruments Great for Learning the Basics! Play-a-long Book & 2 CD Set play-a-longs (see "related items" below.) The visual, hands-on demonstration makes their concepts easier to grasp. Jamey even plays along with tracks from those two play-a-long volumes, showing proper application of scales to chords and essential practice techniques.

Lots of good information, but too much and too fast for this beginning improviser. With my short attention span and, at age 72, even shorter memory I just can't keep up with it. I've been playing, off and on, for fifty years, but this makes me feel like a rookie facing a hundred mile fastball. Please, Jamie, dial this monster down. Slower tempos, simpler progressions, fewer repeats, more distinct chord changes. This is entry level only for a young protege who plays several hours a day.

Gave it as a gift to a friend who didn't actually know much music theory. This video doesn't really explain much (I felt), but just demonstrates it instead; basically, it's hard to understand how Jamey Aebersold is improvising unless you already know the music theory concepts that he's applying as he improvises. Which basically negates the entire point of this video, since you seem to need to know what's being taught beforehand, to understand what's being taught.

Furthermore, Jamey Aebersold seems to expect that you also have his books / recordings. He says to follow along using those materials, which my friend didn't have, which basically... again... didn't make this too useful in helping her improvise.

Jamey Aebersold gives us a distillation of his many books on jazz improvisation in a 2 hour dvd. The material is simply and clearly presented with strong suggestions as to how start improvising.

A word of warning: The listener needs to know basic music theory, - chords and their main types, scales (major, dorian, dominant, half diminished, blue) and their construction - to be able to follow Jamey's discussion. This material is summarized in a good little booklet that accompanies the dvd.

Jamey believes that anyone can improvise while playing, and tells the listener how to overcome the major obstacles that the beginner improviser must overcome. He recommends starting to improvise when first learning your instrument,

Yes Jamey does push his book/recording sets, but does so reasonably. Jamey also explains and demonstrates how to use his other books.

This dvd is an excellent introduction to the problems of improvising and how to over come them. This dvd is an excellent simple description of how to approach improvisation. Will this dvd alone make you a top notch improviser? No, but with other resources Jamey recommends and a few of his other book / recording sets, and lots of practice this dvd points the way.

Jamey speaks clearly with obvious passion for his art. The dvd is easy to listen to, and moves along through the material at a reasonable rate of speed for the listener who knows basic music theory.

Must 1: Get to know Jamey Aebersold because he is an excellent music teacher. And I follow those I believe are the best teachers in their fields. Must 2: If you are struggling with jazz improvisation, chords, two hand voicing and the like, you will improve your knowledge a lot with this DVD.
