"The translation of this text allows the reader a unique and unlimited view inside the secluded walls of one of Tibet's most influential meditation training centers." --The Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies

From the Back Cover

In the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions, a three-year, three-month meditation retreat must be completed before a person is considered a lama (teacher). This manual was written for individuals wanting this rigorous training and consists of spiritual practices Kongtrul considered most essential--he guides students preparing for retreat, provides full details of the meditation program and offers advice for re-entry into the world.

Ngawang Zangpo (Hugh Leslie Thompson) completed two three-year retreats under the direction of the late Kalu Rinpoche. He is presently working on a number of translation projects under the direction of Chadral Rinpoche and Lama Tharchin Rinpoche. His previous works include Jamgon Kongtrul's Retreat Manual and Enthronement: Recognition of the Reincarnate Masters of Tibet and The Himalayas. He also contributed to the work of Kalu Rinpoche's translation group's books Myriad Worlds and Buddhist Ethics.
