Infusing classic R&B with 70's to 80's funk grooves with a bit of electronic experimentation, Jamie triumphs with this fantastic new album...a must have! If he lost you a bit with Compass, but you wanted more of what was promised with tracks like Telephone....you'll love it!

Following his 2008 release Jim,which was something of the apex of his creativity in the funk/soul idiom,Jamie Lidell returned two years later with Compass-a very uneven album that seemed to have a lot of difficulty resolving the conflict between live instrumental fluidity and electronic noodling. Funny thing is,that was something Lidell seemed to have resolved far earlier. So I never understood why some of the songs on that were among his best, while a lot of them were barely worth mentioning. Sometimes an artist makes such decisions for the sake of just being musically diverse. The results will vary, and that might have been what Lidell did there. I am not inside his head. But that same year another artist with whom Lidell appeared on the cover of Paste magazine once with began to go in a similar musical direction that he had helped pioneer: her name was Janelle Monae. Taking into account what she did on her The ArchAndroid seems to have made an impact on him because the Jamie Lidell of 2005-2008 is back with a musical vengeance!

From back to front this album is full on inspired by early/mid 80's boogie and naked electro funk. On "I'm Selfish" and "Big Love" that's just what he delivers in full, with his big deep soul vocals wailing out right up their with the expressive, bass synth and percussive drum machine heavy synthesizer operating at peak level.

Jamie Lidell's self-titled album shoots off in yet another direction: electro-funk. The 80s synths on "I'm Selfish" seem to fit right in with his vocals, while "Big Love" seems to have beamed down straight from the 70s. "Do Yourself A Faver" lets up on the electro (if not the funk), but the electronics makes a comeback on "You Naked." He channels Stevie Wonder in "Blaming Something," but in a really interesting twist, "Why_Ya_Why" moves more towards dark New Orleans-tinged jazz but with added video games. The video games take on a emotional soul with "So Cold," and "In Your Mind" brings us back full-circle to the electro-funk. It's a fun new path for Lidell.

My only critique is that this album misses the timeliness of Jim and another reviewer mentioned cohesiveness, but put this album on random and I'm hard pressed not to dance at any given point.

At one point I imagined 80's Prince or Morris Day and the Time calling Jamie up and saying, "Hey we were gonna make this!" But he did it, and perhaps just as similarly, the movement to more funk and synth based music like that of Motown's greatest soul contributors finds a fitting comparison. Jamie is finding that route and showing off his appreciation. This album is bounded together from Lidell's soulful voice, which to me is the most truthful and honest of this new electro-soul movement that is reviving in spurts these days. Acts like Sharon Jones and Jamiroquai bring a great nod to soul, but Jamie is the only one who I feel transforms it! I get the opposition and I understand it can be a hard pill to swallow at times, but this man is putting out album after album of music that is effectively danceable and appreciable to just chillin. It's good and you should get it, but don't come from nowhere to listen, start with at least 2 previous albums and then you'll see its progress.

This took me a couple of listens, but the production is probably his best. source material is more 80s, but he works it out and it's a party rocker
