Amazon.com Product Description

A fast, fun, and efficient way to create delicious flavors with the simple shake of the wrist, this innovative tool makes quick work of an otherwise cumbersome kitchen task. Designed by celebrity-chef Jamie Oliver, the shaker can be used to whip together savory spice rubs and marinades for meat or seafood, healthful salad dressings and sauces, fresh salsa, and more in one smooth move--and without the need for a mortar-and-pestle tool or messy food processor. To use, simply add the desired ingredients--everything from whole spices and herbs to garlic, nuts, citrus rind, and olive oil--and drop in the included ceramic ball, which serves as the crushing agent. Securely screw the two halves together, taking care to align the arrow indicators on the grips. Finally, give the entire unit a vigorous shake and open it to pour, scoop, or rub the contents onto a main dish, salad, or cut of meat. Additional highlights include a transparent viewing window, an ergonomic shape and black rubber grip, and a sleek design that stores compactly between uses. Safe for use in the dishwasher (top rack recommended), the shaker comes with delicious recipe suggestions and measures approximately 3-1/2 by 3-1/2 by 6 inches.

Product Description

The Jamie Oliver Flavour Shaker is designed to crush, mix and release flavor from whole spices, herbs, garlic, nuts, citrus rind or even lime or bay leaves. It is easier to use and easier to clean than a mortar and pestle. In just a few seconds you can create and add flavor to all kinds of everyday dishes. You can make meat rubs for really aromatics roasts and grills; marinades, dips, oil dressings for salads, sauces and salsas just to name a few ideas. Simply pop your ingredients inside, add the magic ceramic ball and give it a good shake. The ceramic ball does all the work crushing, grinding and bruising the contents, releasing amazing aromas and zingy flavors. Liquids such as olive oil and creams can be added to create delicious dressings and marinades. The Flavour Shaker is sized to give just the right amount of marinade or dressing (you do not need a lot) so the contents can be poured directly onto the food. Four easy steps to great tasting food: add ingredients then drop in the ceramic ball. Next, screw the halves together securely, making sure the arrows are aligned and then give it a good shake. Open up and pour, scoop or rub on to the food.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jamie's Shaker, March 12, 2007

(REAL NAME)
I was given one of these shakers as a Christmas gift while in Australia. It is really good, but you do have to be very careful to make sure it is connected together properly before shaking. I didn't - I was crushing some flax seeds and the ball smashed pieces of the plastic case away. It was VERY easy to make this mistake, and now the locking mechanism is badly damaged. However, it is great for crushing seeds and nuts; making a 'paste' from parsley or coriander (cilantro) leaves etc. I recommend it - but do take care it is 'locked' before shaking!

3.0 out of 5 stars kind of sort of works, February 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this based partly on the glowing review in Cook's Illustrated, and partly because it looked like a way to control how finely I ground my spices. Some four months later, after extensive use, I find myself throwing up my hands because it does not do what I'd like it to do. For example:

Peppercorns or coriander: I wanted to get coarsely cracked corns. What I find is a mix of pulverized corns and uncracked corns. I suppose that they average to coarsely cracked, but averaging is not what I had in mind.

Garlic or fresh herbs (such as rosemary): bruised rosemary would be fine; unblemished rosemary after 3 minutes of shaking is not. Garlic does not turn to a paste (as desired), but emerges slightly bruised. A chef's knife would have done that better and faster.

Star anise and cumin seed: apparently the equivalent of kryptonite for the shaker.

Fennel seed: finely ground power. This one worked!

Juniper berries: somewhat mashed; not as efficient as the side of a cleaver, however.

All in all, the hype and the reality did not match. The principle sounds fine; I wish reality kept up with thoery. If you listen to music while you cook, it does give a good back beat, so all is not lost.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cracked after 3 uses..., July 14, 2009

I like Jamie, but mate, this thing cracked after 3 uses. First 2 times use was garlic and green chilli, then I tried some cumin and noticed a crack in the bottom. This is likely a one-off or batch issue with the molded plastic, but very is disappointing nevertheless. Its expensive too - $25!.
