Book Description

August 2003
Inspired by the lives of real people, Jamie's Watch uses fiction to probe the mysterious and sometimes frightening disability of autism. This book tells the story of James Robert Spencer— an autistic boy who is affectionately known as "Jamie" by his family and friends. It unfolds the remarkable account of Jamie’s life and his uncommon influence on the lives of others. This novel opens an authentic and compassionate window into the world of autism. Through it, you will share in the anguish and joys of Jamie's parents. You will hike with Jamie, play his unique brand of football, and accompany him through the dark tunnels of Knobby Cave. You will see the world through Jamie's eyes: a place rich with patterns and routines but pale in relationships. And you will discover the ancient pocket watch that is intimately linked to the boy's life. This is a story offering unusual insight into one of the world's most baffling afflictions. It is a story of adversity and endurance, of sacrifice and love. Most of all, it is a story of hope - hope for everyone who has a Jamie somewhere in his or her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and thoughful story about a boy with Autism, November 16, 2005
This review is from: Jamie's Watch (Paperback)
This book is a thoughtful look into a family struggling to understand Autism. With few novels exploring this subject, I was excited to read the story of Jamie and his day to day impact on the lives of his family. Having grown up with an autistic brother, I could relate to many of the struggles of Jamie's parents and siblings. There are also poignant glimpses of the world from Jamie's perspective. With a deeply moving ending and uplifting message, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring autism and reading good fiction at the same time.
