Cheikh Lo's Best Album so far, November 22, 2011
I love this album; to my ear it is even better than his earlier Ne La Thiass album that is getting 5 stars on Amazon.
There are a variety of moods expressed -- happy, mysterious, serious, focused. The riff melodies repeat throughout the songs and are very catchy; they drive the music. The riff melodies are built on two bar phrases, shorter than 4-bar phrases (or longer) typical in US/western music. The energy level is fairly high because of the active bass line. Each song establishes a mood which is typically maintained throughout; there are few if any major mood transitions. But there is substantial variety in moods between various songs. The texture is both full and clean, typically composed of electric guitar (no distortion), acoustic guitar, bass (very active), drums, voice, filling up the frequency range in a way that the different sounds compliment each other nicely, without competing, making the ambiance clean.
The musicians are clearly both talented and practiced. The music has some depth of expression; I am left with the sense that the musical themes are both well explored and highly developed with harmonization and counter melodies, using a variety of instruments. The recording quality itself is top-notch as well.
This is a refreshing change from standard western music that you probably hear everywhere else. It is one of my favorite world music albums of the year (2011), and is highly deserving of a listen.
Highly recommended!

Superb, December 17, 2011
This is a great album. In addition to Cheikh Lo's beautiful voice and his distinct melodic sound, you will find latin-cuban influences that can be heard in some of the early West African recordings, such as Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux and a relatively recent compilation - Africa Boogaloo (
Africa Boogaloo: Latinization of West Africa).
The cover of Orchestra Poly Rythmo''s 'Il N'est Jamais Trop Tard' is such a surprise! Highly Recomended.
