4.0 out of 5 stars Typical blowin' session, February 27, 2005

This 4-track CD is what was known back in the 50s as a "blowin' session": everybody jams on the chords of a tune (usually a standard or a blues) for a prescribed number of choruses; after everone's had a taste, the tune ends. On to the next song. This is a typical blowin' session, with some excellent players involved, which is why it works: along with Gene's tenor there are Idrees Sulieman (tp), Jackie McLean (as), Mal Waldron (p), Kenny Burell (g), Paul Chamber (b) and Art Taylor (d). In other words, the cream of the crop of hard-bop players in NYC at the time. Too much of this kind of thing could get boring, but this is a very nice album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jammin' is the concept, Ammons is the reality, November 5, 2002

Gene comes out sassy in Twister and Chambers keeps the group moving on the bass line. Chambers pushes everbody to find the groove and jam within it. If you like creativity that moves and professionals that share the stage, pick this one up. These are musician's musicians.
