The Jamo Story

It's 1966. In the fishing village of Glyngore, Denmark, carpenter Preben Jacobsen begins building loudspeakers in his henhouse. Though blessed with great woodworking skills and broad knowledge of acoustic technology, Preben soon comes to realize that selling the remarkable speakers he's built is not his strength. In 1968, he brings his brother-in-law Julius Mortensen - an experienced salesman and exporter - into the mix, and Jamo is born.

Speakers that sound as great as they look

From that humble beginning, Jamo has grown to become one of Europe's largest and most respected loudspeaker manufacturers. And, as a Klipsch Group brand, Jamo has expanded into the Asian and North American markets. Through the years, Jamo has received widespread recognition for creating products with a uniquely 'Danish sound', a balance that can best be described as open, clear, coherent - and undeniably musical.

Jamo products are designed and engineered to maintain the proud Danish traditions of beauty and functionality. This is reflected in the contemporary, yet timeless, look of its creations and their use of only the highest quality materials. As a result, the speakers and other products developed by our craftsmen combine durability, simplicity and aesthetics that add to the beauty of any setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must if you own Jamo "front" speakers., January 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jamo C60 CEN Center Channel Speaker (Single, Black) (Electronics)
I believe a bit of background is in order to understand my love of this speaker:

Like many married men, my home audio setup is comprised of components purchased over a large number of years. Every piece studied and determined to have the best quality at the best price - because that's the only way to get purchases approved in a household if they are not a fabulous new pair of shoes, or a Prada handbag. My home audio system spans nearly 20 years and two marriages, trust me when I say I am an expert.
My last "big" audio purchase was a set of Jamo E855 floorstanding speakers about eight years ago. I found a local merchant that was patient enough to let me spend about 4 hours previewing his entire stock of loudspeakers. The Jamos are hard to describe using any other word than perfect. The sound quality and dynamic range is awesome.

So, prior to the Jamos, I ran Advent Ruby B2R bookshelf speakers and a single JBL center (that I bought from a pile of discontinued speakers for $10). This setup worked well for home theater (mind you, we're talking about watching movies on VHS now) until I bought the E855's. I then procured a NHT 1.1 to use as a center and thought everything sounded good.

This brings us to the end of 2009, and I finally get my hands on a PS3 / Blu-ray player. One benefit of bluray is the extended audio range available. I am not talking frequency range - I am talking *volume*. Whenever there is an action scene, you get *explosive* sound potential - and if that potential is combined with a high current amplifier, your 20-year old center channel is not long for this world.
The first Bluray we watched was "Bolt" - and the intro scene where all he11 breaks loose and Bolt has to protect his owner from the bad guys - well, the NHT died. I substituted one of my advent rubies and that lasted until"X-men Origins: Wolverine".

Bluray can place such a huge demand on your speakers that they can damage themselves - my speakers (both) ripped out their entire foam surrounds from the woofer cone. Before you think my cheap amplifier was clipping, I have a h/k PA5800 - 5 channels @ 80W @ 8ohms and 80 amps of available current. Laymens terms - I'm not working this amp hard enough to get anywhere near clipping.

I decided it was time to spend some money and get a Jamo center speaker; many people claim the timbre of the center must match the timbre of the other speakers in the system. Whatever. As long as a speaker sounds good and can reproduce voices accurately, what's the big deal?

Well, come to find out, it is incredibly important, LOL. Of course I didn't know this until I actually hooked up my new C60CEN and popped in a movie to watch. I chose "The Fifth Element" and sat back and enjoyed. I can not believe how much sound I had been missing from movies before the C60CEN. Of course, the voices were clear and the center channel performed great for that - but it was how the soundstage opened up that was so shocking!

Now that I have all my front speakers with the same drivers and very similar sonic performance, you hear much more detail in the movie as all three speakers match sound output. When I say "output", I mean that the same frequencies are reproduced at nearly the same sound levels, so the net sound out of the speakers is more balanced and heard like it is supposed to.
As far as build quality goes, it is classic Jamo quality; beautiful cabinet, hardware and speaker connections are top of the line and the sound is fantastic. And based on the quality of my eight-year old E855's, I should not have to worry about any problems with my C60CEN.

I have heard rumor that Jamo is now owned by Klipsch, and I'm not sure what that means for the product's future, but all of the Jamo speakers I have were made in Denmark and are of the highest quality. Don't know if the newer models are similar in quality - but keep this in mind when buying other Jamo products (not that Klipsch is crap, LOL ).

4.0 out of 5 stars Matches Jamo C60x fronts., August 13, 2010
This review is from: Jamo C60 CEN Center Channel Speaker (Single, Black) (Electronics)
This speaker matches my C605 front speakers perfectly (as it should). I am happy with it. Sound is great. Jamo speakers have a nice non-fatiguing sound, which I enjoy a lot.

I took one star off because I don't like the upward plastic lip on the top front of the speaker. That seems to be a character trait of all the C60x series speakers. It looks nice on my C605 floorstanders, but I don't like it on the center. The reason I don't like it is because it increases the height of the speaker unnecessarily. I put my center in a cabinet and the plastic decor forced me to use the next shelf down, so that it fits. I am being picky, but I wish it wasn't there on the center speaker. This is a non-issue for people who don't place the speaker in a tight fitting area.

I use this with a Denon receiver in a small to medium sized living room. The Audyssey auto-calibration on my Denon set the cross-over for this speaker at 40hz (meaning the -3db point is below 40hz). That is great for this size speaker. That was also measured directly out of the box, with no break in time. However, I did increase the crossover up to 80hz (general rule of thumb per Audyssey).

If you have Jamo C60 fronts, but this center.
