The Jamo Story

It's 1966. In the fishing village of Glyngore, Denmark, carpenter Preben Jacobsen begins building loudspeakers in his henhouse. Though blessed with great woodworking skills and broad knowledge of acoustic technology, Preben soon comes to realize that selling the remarkable speakers he's built is not his strength. In 1968, he brings his brother-in-law Julius Mortensen - an experienced salesman and exporter - into the mix, and Jamo is born.

Speakers that sound as great as they look

From that humble beginning, Jamo has grown to become one of Europe's largest and most respected loudspeaker manufacturers. And, as a Klipsch Group brand, Jamo has expanded into the Asian and North American markets. Jamo products are designed and engineered to maintain the proud Danish traditions of beauty and functionality. This is reflected in the contemporary, yet timeless, look of its creations and their use of only the highest quality materials. As a result, the speakers and other products developed by our craftsmen combine durability, simplicity and aesthetics that add to the beauty of any setting.

The Jamo 607 is a 3 way, full range floor standing loudspeaker with a narrow (7 inch wide) footprint and has removable spikes. The bass reflex design has the port in the rear. The robust bi-wire speaker terminals accept banana plugs, screw on spade lugs or bare wire. Jamo is one of the largest speaker manufacturers in Europe, in business over 40 years, and was bought out by the Klipsch group five years ago. The Jamo 607 sound is slightly warm and soft as opposed to slightly cold and edgy. If you are primarily into rock music look elsewhere. The Jamo is not a killer rock speaker, but will do a good job of soft rock such as Bruce Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia.

The Jamo does better with pop music and vocals, such as Placido Domingo's rendition of Paul McCartney's Yesterday. Where the Jamo shines is in classical music with a wide natural sound stage with real acoustic instruments such as pianos, violins, clarinets and so forth. Listen to Stravinsky conducting his own Firebird and the grotesque fantasy comes through. The Jamo bass is deep, articulate and ominous rather than a punchy rock style. A subwoofer is only necessary for home theater bang and crash sounds, not two channel stereo unless you are a bass freak. Emil Gilels playing Beethoven's Pathetique is masterful and thrilling. The stereo image is outstanding, for example, the movement of performers on the stage and the foot stomping in Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore is clearly heard in a dark room, (the best way to audition any loudspeaker). Full symphonic works such as Beethoven's 9th with chorus is convincing without strain. The Jamo 607 is smooth, and controlled rather than sharp and in your face. If you are into pop and classical music, this is a best buy.

I bought these speakers in Europe with Marantz SR5007 receiver. I auditioned about 6 or 7 different speakers from brands like KEF, Monitor Audio, Cabasse, Wharfedale, Boston Accoustics, Q Accoustics, Dali and perhaps some others. They were all in the price range of $800-1200 a pair. I paid $1000 for these Jamos which included a 21% VAT.

The reason I bought them was because from all speakers in that price range I listened to these sounded rich and with excellent bass response. They are very musical indeed. I auditioned them with this previously mentioned Marantz receiver as my purpose for them was 20% movies and the rest is music. So I also bought some good cables and off I was.

A bit of my experience with them: When I brought them home and hooked them up I immediately felt something was off as they did not sound same as in store. In short they sounded stiff, thin and lacked timbre that I loved so much when I heard them. I spend hours on the internet reading about the brake-in or burn-in periods of various speakers. About 40 hours of listening I felt the sound was improving but I decided to start looking for a good sub as the bass was still weak. Luckily, I waited longer and the bass opened up much more later, perhaps about 100 hour into listening to them. I was happy, yet I could not understand why I was not being moved by the music coming from the speakers. The sound was so warm and soft it lacked excitement and spaciousness. I listen to a lot of electronic and world music so I really like all those sounds and vibrations percolating through space with longer extensions but these Jamos just weren't giving them to me.

These are probably as clear and natural sounding as just about any speaker I have auditioned. If you really care about accurate sound reproduction, then I would love to see someone tell me what's better after a side by side test. I am running an h/k receiver with a dedicated citation amp coming out the avr pre amp. These are truly great speakers. I have listened to a ton of speakers in my quest for audio bliss including quad, kef, definitive, Polk, klipshe, infinity, b and w, warfs, Vienna acoustics, etc..... these are in fact my favorite thus far. Some of the speakers i have listened to were up to $4k and I still like these. I am very tempted to try out the c 809s next.

Im going to make this as painless as i can, these are a bigger sounding speaker than the already excellent c605.Also like the c605 they need volume to get the best from them. They will sound great with most decent amp/av recievers, but they can handle a fair bit of power, which ultimately leads to where they can compete with speakers at twice their price. This is not news to most people who opted for them. They will not be as easily driven as the studio series eg:s608/606 & s506,good speakers in their own right.

The c607 can be pumped to extreme noise terror in good action/sci fi/horror movies, without ever sounding harsh or bright. Then for most music from classical to heavy rock (not grunge/death metal),they again produce the goods with a nice controlled bottom end to a beautiful midrange followed by silky smooth treble.

IMO they have no real weakness except anyone looking for an in-ur-face coloured sound, with a fairly good but lovely looking build quality.I have these connected to a c60ctr,c60 surs & sub650,TBH i only use the sub for movies for the extra bangs & rumbles as these go down to approx 30hz,fact.I know they are getting on a bit now but go on see for yourselves,as they are not a bit fussy but a hugely powerful & entertaining speaker.
