'Miltiades Varvounis describes Sobieski's personality and lasting accomplishments in an exciting and illuminating way that will captivate the imagination of every reader of History books, while, at the same time, bringing back to life a period of relentless struggles between Christianity and Islam that formed the ''last chapter'' of European chivalry.'
DR NICOLAOS NICOLOUDIS, King's College London

'This masterpiece by Miltiades Varvounis not only brings to light a forgotten genius but also sheds light onto an important part of the long turbulent Turkish history.'
CUMA BARAK, University of Gaziantep

'The author masterfully brings to light one of the most prominent personalities of the seventeenth century who was not only a great ruler and an astute military leader but who also changed the course of history by saving Europe from the Islamic onslaught.'
LITHUANIAN HERITAGE magazine

'A fascinating, thorough and very much needed biography of a leader whose name is virtually unknown outside of Eastern Europe. Varvounis describes Sobieski with just the right dose of historical detail and imagination - this is a work of history that reads like a work of fiction.'
EWA BRONOWICZ, The Post Eagle

As a novelist who has researched the Siege of Vienna for years and produced an historical novel of the time, I think this study of Jan Sobieski is first rate. The author has access to documents not translated into English, so there was much to learn. Jan III Sobieski was a true hero, and the author takes us back to a time when Christianity could have been erased from the European continent if it had not been for Sobieski and his selfless sacrifices. This is a very well written account of the king's times, adventures, challenges, and victories.

Were it not for Jan Sobieski history would be very different. He stoped the Turks from their goal to conquer all of Europe, and all of Christendom. He unified the many diverse nationalities of Europe, the Poles, Germans, Cossacks,Russian, Ukrainians, and Austrians, and led them to victory over the Ottoman Empire. His stand in Vienna stemmed the spread of Islam and kept Europe Christian. Many of these European Christians immigrated to the Americas, Australia, and other places on the globe, so Sobieski's achievements benefited uncountable millions. That he is not more well known is unfortunate, for we owe him a great deal.

I found this book to be excellent in every regard, a great accounting of a chapter in Polish (and European) history that is all too often overlooked in today's schools. Once I started reading this book, I found it very hard to put down. An excellent accounting of the last great Polish king. I highly recommend it.

Truly a great book, the writing style pulls you in and the level of detail really helped me envision the charge of the Hussar like no other author has done. Sobieski literally saved europe but no one knows his name. I can't believe I got this great book for $3 on my Kindle!

Jan Sobieski was probably one of the best military leaders Poland ever had and his history is replete with battle after battle. Sobieski accomplished many successes militarily and politically against remarkable odds. And yes, there is very little written about the man in English. He certainly was "The Terror of the Turk" and saved Vienna from singing the praises of Allah (even though most histories on the battle of Vienna try to hide and derogate his contribution to the relief of Vienna and defeat of the Ottomans in Europe). This book could have been a breakthrough on the subject; however, it is seriously lacking. It appears that a Pole or Lithuanian with knowledge of Polish translated Polish source material directly into English, but left it in the Polish idiom. Additionally, sentences are grammatically incorrect with plurals used where a singular word form was required. For me, the book presented too much information to quit or otherwise put it down, but it could easily deter one who is not accustomed to reading direct foreign translations.

The author tells a great story about a great leader of Poland who restored his nation and saved Vienna, and thus all Europe from the sweep of the Muslim Ottoman Empire. The translation from the original is at times awkward. The author writes in the adoring style of older biographies but the subject gives the author sufficient cause. Anyone who enjoys a biography of people who actually changed history, will find this book fascinating.

It is great to come across a book that not only is about a passionate King in every aspect, who had a big influence on European history, but also it is written by a passionate person, which is proved in good writing.

Excellent. Well researched. Obviously translated from a different language or by someone who does not have a command of the English language. Many times the author uses terms difficult to understand or the syntax is scrambled.
