Book Description

July 11, 2006
Jan Steen is surely one of the most amusing painters of the seventeenth century. His paintings reveal a keen interest in scenes from ordinary life, for weddings and feasts, for the celebration of St. Nicholas and the Epiphany, all shown with a comical note. He was also a superb technician with remarkable methods of working. This book discusses the many works by Steen held in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and goes on to explore his entire oeuvre. In addition it also describes his life, his self image and his reputation. The elusive Steen was more than just a comedian and the symbol of a disorderly household; he was also a connoisseur of art, theater and the stories of classical mythology and the Bible. Jan Steen deserves the fullest praise and this book will serve as a tribute to this talented artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great & affordable introduction to Jan Steen, February 6, 2008

This review is from: Jan Steen 1626-1679 (Rijksmuseum Dossiers) (Paperback)
Jan Steen is a wonderfully fun artist from the "Golden Age" of the Netherlands. This book was written by a former curator of the Rijksmuseum (in Amsterdam) where several Steen paintings are displayed. I learned alot from this book and enjoy Steen's work even more now.

If you like this kind of art visit the Rijkmuseum website for pictures/descriptions of their paintings and a widget for your computer.

Well explained on the day to day lifestyles of the 17th century. This book comes across well in showing us, the reader how they lived! The colorfull pages are breath taking. Even showing us how the artist used the same picture but changed many subject matters. Very interesting...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good But Small, December 3, 2010

I returned this because although it had a nice text and reproductions, its size was too small to actually study the painting with any care.
