I purchased this pack after an extensive search for a replacement bag. I use this bag for work, and carry it every day. I am an architect, so I carry a lot of "stuff" with me every day: Digital camera, a couple calculators, flashlight, a 30 foot retractable steel tape, a 100 foot steel tape, a small first aid kit, screwdrivers, multi-tool, circuit tester, marking tape, lots of pens and pencils, umbrella, several notebooks, an insulated lunch bag, a couple of architectural and engineering scales (about 13" long),11x17 drawings (typically 2-3 projects of 20-50 sheets each), and occasionally larger rolls of drawings (24x36 or 30x42 - sometimes up to 5-6 rolls of 20-50 sheets each), and occasionally my Kindle or a laptop too. I'd say on an average day I carry 15 pounds of gear, and fully loaded, probably carry close to 40. The capacity of this bag is amazing, even though it doesn't look that big unloaded, or partially loaded.
The straps are quite comfortable, although I am of large build and with a heavy winter coat I approach the end of the strap extension. I would expect that this would not be an issue for most people, however. Even when fully loaded, I found this to be one of the most comfortable packs I've tried. The pack has a bottom pouch, where I store some heavy and durable items, like tape measures and the first aid kit. I don't worry so much about these items getting damaged, or even getting wet, but the bottom of the bag isn't particularly level, and the bag tends to slump or tip more than I'd like. I tried other loads in the bottom, and nothing at all, and found the tipping was only exacerbated. The design has a good center of gravity for carrying, just not for sitting on the floor. I carry this bag on the train daily, stow it in my car and under my desk, but it frequently goes to construction sites with me. The lack of extraneous hooks, loops and straps make it much safer and easier for me to carry in construction zones than most packs of similar volume, which is a big plus. One of the most convenient features was a small zippered pouch that sits just below the top handle. I expect that the designer had in mind that this would be a useful place for a media player... and it probably would be, if I used one. My use is to give me ready access to thumb drives, extra memory cards for my camera and similar small and sensitive electronics. In my previous bag I never had a convenient location like this, and given that I access these items several times every day, it is a real boon. What would I do differently to improve this model? I'd add a removable waist strap - I typically walk 2-3 miles a day with this pack on, and when fully loaded, I'd like the ability to share the load with my hips more. I like the top pouch so well; it might be nice to have two up there, and one with a sleeved connection to the exterior, so if you wanted to connect ear buds to a media player you wouldn't need to leave the pouch partly open. I'd also consider a flatter bottom, possibly rubberized to improve stability and durability of the bottom of the pack. Would I buy another of these packs, even without these suggested refinements? Absolutely.

I got this pack a week ago and I have to say it does fit a lot. I carry 2 small textbooks, 3 full-sized textbooks, a binder, My 15.6" Dell Inspiron 15, and a thick hoody. All these fit with more room to spare. The Lower compartment set for wires and such does its job. The First small division of the pack has alot of small pockets where you can put anything from sunglasses to wallets. The second compartment has adequate room to carry anything from books to clothes and the largest compartment has a flip(laptop) sleeve to hold up to a 17". Overall the pack is good looking and does its job. The straps are very comftable and another thing about this pack is that it is extremely light. When loaded it doesn't feel heavy on the back. I would have given this Jansport Backpack 5 stars if it had extra straps on the chest and tummy area. For a large pack those extra straps should come standard. Great PACK! LOOKS GOOD as well.

the size of the bag is perfect for all my books, and it has room to spare.
the straps are well designed so that the weight of my huge books is well distributed. Backpack is extremely comfortable to carry. Laptop sleeve and dedicated power adapter area on bottom of bag is well designed.

It is a great bag. I use it for multiple things. The only thing I wish was a feature was that it was water resistant. Other than that... I am in love with this bag

Great pack! I haven't had a backpack in a while, but this one is just what I need. The straps are comfortable, and lots of pockets for gear. I loved the scarlet color and gray and black trim. The zipper pulls are sturdy and help you find the zippers quickly. The padded handle on top is great for grabbing the pack and going. I haven't tried to put my laptop in it, but I'm sure it'll fit. I like the padding in the back; even with my bike lock in the pocket closest to me, I couldn't feel it. LOTS of room in this pack. Jansport's done it again with a super pack!

This is a great backpack for carrying around bigger laptops. Fits 16" screens comfortably. Keep in mind it is pretty big and can really carry a load. Also there are a lot, zippers and storage pockets - great for organizing everything you have to carry around. Well-built and well-designed.

I recently purchased this backpack, and after using it for a few weeks, I have to say that it's a great pack for those with lots of things to stash. I use it to carry my lunch, book-of-the-week, work materials, etc. as I commute to and from work in the Washington, DC, metro area. I also used it during a recent march/rally in DC, and it was wonderful for toting multiple coats, water bottles, cameras, food items, and more.
I'm also impressed with the shoulder padding, the light weight of the pack itself, and the fact that it's far more water-resistant than my last JanSport backpack. I think the only feature I'd add is a flatter bottom so that I could prop the backpack upright in various situations. Overall, a great backpack and an excellent value!

Amazing bookbag,

Let me start off saying that I'm a heavy packer when it comes to a schoolday. I'm a graduate student going to school eight hours a day several days a week. I had a Targus bookbag for five years before getting the Boost bookbag. The Targus bookbag was good but not what I needed. I searched hours on jansport.com and amazon looking for the best bookbag with good reviews.
This bookbag is huge. It's bigger than the picture on amazon and jansport.com. It's much taller than I expected, but that's a positive. It can hold up to 17 inch laptops. There are four main compartments in this bag. The bag compartment is where the laptop goes and a couple average size textbooks can go as well. The second compartment is where I put my binder and maybe another smaller textbook. The front compartment is the greatest part. It has so much room! It has two cell phone or MP3 player slots, a place where I can put my graphing calculator, a place for a couple supplies(my mini stapler goes in there) and lots of other space to put other items. I put my wallet and my small cosmetic bag in there. The bottom compartment is where I put my laptop charger. I'm so glad Jansport came up with the idea of putting it below rather than with the laptop and taking up horizontal space. At the very top of the bag, there is a zipped up little compartment, where I store my Blackberry cell phone. It's the perfect spot! What I also love about this bag, are the two little net areas on each side of the bag. I use one for my umbrella and the other for a bottle of water. I'm really impressed with this bag. It has everything a bag should have for someone who carries a lot and likes to be organized. The only thing not good about it was the bag was somewhat crooked. Like the back bag compartment material wasn't straight with the rest of the compartment material. I don't think other people will notice. I noticed it because I was admiring the bag and it stood out at me. But that doesn't prevent me from recommending this bag! If you want organization and lots of room this bag is an excellent option.

Jansport continues to make great quality products. I have a 17.3in laptop and it fits perfectly. My laptop is snug and secure. There is plenty of room for my binder and two other textbooks. There is a nice compartment in the front to hold plenty of smaller items. The shoulder straps are well made and comfortable and the zippers are sturdy. I would definitely recommend this backpack to anyone.

We purchased this bookpack for our high school son to replace his original LLBean bookpack that he had since grade school and which he obviously outgrew. We chose this model, because it had the largest capacity of any of the bookpacks that we researched.
We are very happy with it - it is well made and it fits all of his oversized, heavy textbooks (with large white margins and heavy glossy paper to warrant their hefty price tags, but that is a subject for another review...). |
