School backpack turned into hiking daypack,
By The Cuban (Arkansas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: JanSport Sputnik Core Series Daypack (Sports)
Jansport is known for their backpacks cus they last... I bought this backpack ages ago (4 yrs) for school because I wanted to carry my laptop to classes and such. It worked great then because the shoulder straps are well padded and the backside is as well. So I could carry up to 4 medium heavy books with minor strain. The compartments are pretty simple, a bigger one for books and laptop and a smaller one for pens, whiteout, etc. I shoud add that the smaller compartment has three pockets one of which closes with velcro. I used these for pens, my cellphone, and iPod. I didn't have any problems with my laptop as some other reviews have commented. It is made for 15.4" but my 16" laptop fits in it snuggly. Though its true there isn's padding for it, it has not broken from carrying it in 4 years. And I mean setting down, picking up, running to class with it, throwing it on the table, College life in general. So far the backpack is still in great condition. The stitching looks amazing and in 4 years it doesn't show any signs of tearing or weakening stitching. It is a workhorse of a backpack and can handle the load.
Now I'm getting into backpacking and hiking and I figured it might make for a good daypack (being cheap as I am). And yeah it is simple and made for school but I have used it in 3 small hikes so far and it works great. I leave one compartment solely for food and food related items (dog bowl, dog food, human food, etc.) and a smaller "gadget pocket" for my compass, keys, sunglasses, iPod etc. The only downside as a day pack is the mesh side pocket is not big enough to carry my 32 oz nalgene. so I had to downgrade to a smaller water bottle. Otherwise still a great pack overall, simple and durable.

If you can't find a Jansport pack to perfectly fit your needs, then you must be extremely picky about color or something.
This pack is very simple, which is just what my son needed this year. Our kids can go through several brand-x packs in a year without even trying, but have NEVER been able to destroy a Jansport pack. We still have every jansport pack we have ever purchased, and they are used for carry-ons or hiking packs. We only need to get new ones when they get to be too small or out-of-style (that color issue I mentioned earlier).
