5.0 out of 5 stars Youthful brilliance May 3, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is the Prague based Pavel Hass Quartet's debut album, awarded a Gramophone Award in 2007. The quartet itself was named Newcomer of the Year in the 2007 BBC Music Magazine Awards. The renderings of Janacek's Quartet #2 and Pavel Hass's 'From the Monkey Mountain' are crisp and clear, passionate and devoted, with careful phrasing and sensitive attention to each member's solo parts. A truly stunning debut, especially for performers so young.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Marvelous Quartets, in addition to the Human One January 8, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I support the statements of the two reviewers who preceded me here. Janacek's string quartets have never engaged me that much in the past, but here an on the companion disc to this one they've finally found a place in my mind and heart. The Quartet No. 2 is wonderfully rendered; indeed, as I implied in the previous sentence, this is the best performance of it that I've heard. I originally purchased this album for the Haas Quartet No. 2, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a somewhat challenging work to listen to -- as is the Janacek, for that matter -- but more than worth the effort. As in the other piece, the Pavel Haas Quartet do more than right by their namesake, and this is a disc I highly recommend to anyone.

The Pavel Haas Quartet, a young ensemble named after a significant 20th century Czech composer consists of Peter Jarůsek, cello, Pavel Nikl, viola, Veronika Jarůsková 1st vilon and Kateřina Gemrotová, 2nd violin. The youthfulness they demonstrate in the freshness of their approach to these two quartets is mathed only by the inordinately mellow and rich color they are able to bring to this music.

This is their recording debut dating back to 2006 and recorded in Prague and for their debut they have wisely selected Leos Janáček 's greatest work, the famous and often-recorded "Intimate Letters", as well as Pavel Haas' second string quartet. The quartet joins forces here with the 30 year old internationally renowned percussionist from Edinburg, Colin Currie, to present the version with percussion instruments. Pavel Haas wrote the second string quartet, titled "From the Monkey Mountains", at the age of 26 as a reminiscence of his summer holiday in the Czech-Moravian Highlands, which went by this nickname in Brno at the time. The individual movements are more or less genre images. The programme nature of the work is fully consistent with Janacek. The substance and orientation of the music, however, are entirely Haas, underscored by the prescribed ad libitum use of the jazz band.

The Pavel Haas Quartet has grown considerably since the formation of the group. Their sound is even more impressive and their individual solo work is exquisite. But the memorable aspect of each of their performances (they are currently on tour across the United States performing in concert halls and recital halls and art galleries!) is the radiant tutti tone of their perfectly balanced integration and musicality. They are a breath of fresh air and this recording is a treasure. Grady Harp, November 12

Absolutely one of the best string quartet ensembles I've heard in years. Exciting, precise, deeply emotional. I'm going to be buying more of their recordings!
