5.0 out of 5 stars Why pay more?
Like many 70-200 f/4L owners out there, I wouldn't pay the outrageous price for Canon's shamefully priced genuine mount. If I were a professional photographer, and I couldn't risk taking a chance on my gear, maybe I could find a way to justify paying $[...] for something I just paid [...] bucks for. But my gear doesn't help me earn my living, and for the amount of time I...

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT Made of Metal
I'll start this off by saying I wasn't expecting too much for $25. However, the item they have stocked is a PLASTIC ring mount. The only metal on it is the brass insert in the base to attach a tripod mount and the knob to tighten the ring. This renders the item pretty much useless as your camera now shows significant shake because the plastic ring mount flexes with the...

But my gear doesn't help me earn my living, and for the amount of time I will actually use this mount, I made the right choice for me.
My concern, like others, was whether a no-name company could produce a suitable alternative. Obviously there's not much too it, and it is possible. Heck, it comes from the land that has perfected "cloning". But I didn't want it to cause damage to an expensive lens, and I want it to hold my camera securely in 360 degrees.
The metal knob is on the end of a threaded rod that engages the hinged arm. No surprises here.
I have had the mount for only a short time, so it's longevity has yet to be tested, but what I can tell you is that it fits securely, operates nicely and has decent felt lining. And for those that care, the color is pretty close to the lens color.
Bottom line is that it does what it's supposed to do.
Considering that if you were nervous about purchasing this because you needed something reliable on an upcoming adventure, and you don't know if it will last, you could buy up to 6 more of these before you are at the Canon price, as back-ups! From hands on so far, I think one will do just fine.
Other than knowing if the mount will last the distance, I can't find any reason not to recommend it.

I'll start this off by saying I wasn't expecting too much for $25. However, the item they have stocked is a PLASTIC ring mount. The only metal on it is the brass insert in the base to attach a tripod mount and the knob to tighten the ring. This renders the item pretty much useless as your camera now shows significant shake because the plastic ring mount flexes with the slightest touch or vibration. I contacted the seller and they apologized for the misleading ad and offered a $10 credit for the trouble. As of 7-3 they still haven't changed their false listing- surprise, surprise.

Bottom Line: Buy this only if you're simply concerned with looking like you have a ring mount but don't care about a stable image.

This is a piece of junk. I (I'm sure -- like many others) was trying to save some cash by going with this product. Waste of money! The ring is actually plastic. Mine has several cracks (front & rear) after only using it 4 or five times. The only piece of metal on this product is the screw. Don't risk supporting your expensive (or any any other) lenses with this. Luckily I discovered the cracks before a real disaster occurred.

I purchased this item for use on the 70-200mm f4 Canon lens. I always felt the lens was too long for the diameter of the barrel. What a difference having the new tripod collar attached. The lens looks more to scale and even looks quite compact. Build quality is very good and the color match with the lens is spot on. I gave this collar a 4 out of 5 because it is not made out of metal. I don't think it matters as the lens is pretty light but I have the 300mm f4 and the 100-400mm and they have metal collars included. That said, a Canon collar is available at a retail north of $200.00!! For the money this is a "must have" for the 70-200 f4.

4.0 out of 5 stars lens mount, May 12, 2010

The lens mount is very well priced, compared to the exorbitant price that Canon sells the similar item for. My only reservation is that the ring mount is not quite tight enough to hold the lens and camera tight. When you turn the camera from landscape to portrait orientation, sometimes the lens turns inside the mount. It can be compensated for by the way you grasp the camera, lens and mount. But for the price it seems a very minor inconvenience. It is metallic with a felt liner inside the ring. If the felt were a little thicker, I think this would solve the problem. Hey, for this price and the money you save, I can live with a little inconvenience. The mount is also reversible so you get the best balance for your camera/lens combination. The mount is small enough that it stores inside the bag that Canon includes with the lens without having to remove the mount.

Bought a new Canon 70-200 f/4L. Wasn't sure if I needed a lens mount or not so I ordered one. Item seemed well made but really not needed for my lens. Save your money for something else.
