Harvey's well-documented account tells the story of how a young girl from a privileged background chose to devote her life to helping poor workers and immigrants. It provides an adequate starting point for further research and lists longer works in the chapter notes and further reading that explore Addams's motivations, writings, and legacy in much more depth. Black-and-white photographs, maps, and quotes enliven the presentation.
