Book Description

May 1, 1978
Meet Jane....thirty-four, single, an American journalist living in a colorful London loft with a cat, a vibrant sense of humor, and three carefully scheduled lovers: Anthony, a charming, snobby British lord; Franklin, black tennis-playing law student; and Tom, who falls into Jane's life through her skylight (he was just casing the joint). One carefree woman...three devoted lovers (none of whom knows about the others)...and everyone content - until Jane becomes pregnant. And "Whose?" and "What color?" are only the first questions Jane must wrestle with?

4.0 out of 5 stars London in the early 70's, June 29, 2001

This review is from: Jane (Paperback)
Jane is a single American movie critic living in London in the early 70's. She is juggling three - count 'em - three lovers - a handsome black American professor, a titled Englishman and a burglar. From her loft apartment she deals with the difficulties of managing to keep the three of them apart while going to films and writing reviews. She tends to prefer to review the arty films rather than the more popular ones which her newspaper would prefer her critique. She also has a problem with the family of the titled English gentleman. At a dinner at the family seat she wonders if anyone has ever bothered to ask the fox what it thinks of the hunt. Her sense of humor is sharp and she has a keen eye for hypocrites. "Jane" is a terrific story of a woman on her own trying to live an independent life considered more suitable for a man. The writing is good, the characters entertaining and all too human and as the "plot thickens" and I won't divulge how, the reader is rooting for Jane to land on her feet. A thoroughly enjoyable story and I would love to know why it was never made into a move as advertised on the original book cover or why Dee Wells never followed this book with another.

Apparently, Dee Wells (the author) had a stack of typewriter paper, and didn't want to waste it. So, she wrote this lovely book. I keep a tattered copy by my bed, with my other very favourite books. I hope you like it, too.

This review is from: Jane (Hardcover)
Jane is an amazing girl with an amazing life in London. She somehow acquires three lovers, gets pregnant and doesn't know which one is the father, and then asks herself who she really loves. This book is a slice of life, very well written, with great characters. I hated for it to end. I bought it back in the...70s? I can't even remember when, but I've always wondered what happened to the author. She should have written more!
