more than a love story,
By "flymars" (Kannapolis, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jane Eyre (Paperback)
Jane Eyre is more than a love story; it demonstrates a noble way of life. Jane herself is an amazing character because she has an independence that allows her to move on and take responsibility for her own happiness no matter what happens to her. I first read this as a teenager and still think of Jane as the ultimate role model.

A rich and rewarding play - to be read and performed,

This review is from: Jane Eyre (Paperback)
Polly Teale's play version of Bronte's classic, "Jane Eyre" is remarkable not only for its true connection to the book, but even more for its ability to create a world in which the Victorian characters can live, without ostracising a modern audience. I am an acting student from Queensland whose university put on this play, and after watching it five times (voluntarily!)I can say that it never fails to rouse all the emotions. There are some beautiful scenes in this play, particularly at the end of each play, which still cause me to hold my breath. The characters of Bertha and Jane complement each other extraordinarily well, and Polly manages to convey both the passion and the control which rule most of the character's lives. I strongly recommend this play, though I believe its greatest strength lies in the actual performance of the text.

Curiousity killed the cynic of Bronte,
By A Customer
This review is from: Jane Eyre (Paperback)
In high school, I never enjoyed Jane Austen and presumed to lump Bronte under the same category. I had skimmed through "Pride and Prejudice" and opted for the Coles' Notes version *grin* of the novel, operating under the sensibility that the book would contain nothing of value for me and avoided authors like Austen as I would the bubonic plague. However, one day, 3 years later, the title "Jane Eyre" caught my eye in the library and after perusing the introduction by Erica Jong which seemed to lure me even further, I duly decided to give it a read. "Jane Eyre" is a truly worthwhile, masterfully crafted tale of the survival of the human spirit. Despite the adversities continually thrown in the path of Jane, she tramples on, valiant and undaunted. Nothing can break her spirit - not the insouciance of Mrs.Reed or the loss of her childhood friend or the discovery of Mr.Rochester's lunatic wife - and in the end, she gains the happiness she has for so long been in pursuit of. I'm glad I decided to give Charlotte Bronte a read and expose myself to her enthralling narrative style and the overwhelming emotion and essential lessons contained therein.
