Great film - Bad DVD!,
By
This review is from: Jane Eyre (1971) (DVD)
I was so excited to see that this wonderful made-for-tv movie had been released on DVD. What a horrible shock it was to see that the print the DVD was created from was in terrible condition. Whole scenes are missing. The dialog jumps around. The screen goes completely black in the middle of a scene for a good three seconds. There are scratch lines throughout the film. The "original" film itself I give 5 stars (from memory). The DVD -- doesn't deserve a single star. Shame on the production company for not remastering this brilliant film. If you love Jane Eyre, these performances in this are well worth watching, but find a different copy.

An awful treatment of a great story,

I bought the DVD version of this movie on the recommendation of my wife who loved the version she saw aired in television. But the version put to DVD was a disaster.
The lighting was poor to non-existent; the film quality was terrible. Reminding me of a VHS tape that had been copied one too many generations. Entire scenes were simply excised. In one instance Adele is being put to bed, and we immediately cut to another scene - coming in in mid-sentence - where it's the next night. This happens often throughout the film. Characters such as Grace Poole and Mason are never even properly introduced, leaving one to wonder if they'd dozed off for a few minutes during the movie. The DVD we saw was produced by Platinum Disc Corp and they ought to be ashamed! Even at $6.32 it was a gyp. Be careful which version of this movie you buy! We're sending this one back.

Not the orignial tv version I recall. Edited, hacked, half of the novel left out, so parts didn't even make logical sense. When searching for this dvd I read most of the reviews but when I saw this had George C. Scott I recalled this as the one I was searching for and obivously didn't read the reviews. Never imagined someone would butcher the original sooo badly!

A beautiful movie butchered,

I first saw this movie when I was in high school - over 30 years ago. A hopeless romantic, I fell in love with this version. I was so excited when I found it on DVD. Imagine the horror as I watched a hacked, edited, and chopped up edition of what was a beautiful film. Save your money for the version with Timothy Dalton. This one is a total waste!

Poor, Poor Pitiful Jane,
This review is from: Jane Eyre (1971) (DVD)
I was excited to find this "Jane Eyre," as I had fond memories of this 1971 version being my first encounter with the Jane Eyre story. What story? It's abbreviated to the point of being nearly unrecognizable. (Read the book first. I've yet to see ANY production translate some of the beautiful moments in the text to the screen.) This is either a DVD of a very bad print -- with cuts so huge one wonders if parts of the film were lost and some genius decided to sell it "as is" -- or simply a terrible television adaptation. This is surprising because the credits of those involved are estimable: Jack Pulman (who adapted "I Claudius" for the television!) did the teleplay; John Williams wrote the score (and revamped it into the score for "Dracula" some 8 years later); George C. Scott plays Rochester (good casting) and Suzanna York, as good an actress as she may be, is completely miscast in the role. Not only is she too "mature," but far too pretty. Don't waste your time or energy on this. What a disappointment.

A Badly Edited Copy Of A Good Movie!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Jane Eyre (1971) (DVD)
First off I want to state that this is not a terrible movie! It stars George C. Scott who is one of the greatest actors of all time so how can it be terrible? I Take the advice by the reviewers who are actually old enought to have seen this back in the early 70's that the movie and acting was good and that the short choppy thing you are getting on the DVD is not what was seen on the original TV airings but has been edited on the DVD. Apparently this is a print of an edited version that had footage cut out so they could add more room for commercials and I plead that someone release the original unedited version!

Close to the book,

I was surprised that this movie was pretty close to the book. With most books that become movies, they are NOTHING like what the author had in mind, but this one is.Another reviewer commented on the quality of the DVD: I have had no problems with mine.

Jane Eyre - Such a disappointment,
This review is from: Jane Eyre (1971) (DVD)
As a fan of the Bronte sister's writings and of George C.Scott's performances, it was a wonderful delight to see that the made-for-TV movie was actually on DVD. As delighted as I was to find the movie, is as disappointed at watching this DVD. The editing butchers the story line, complete chapters are missing, dialogue that moves the story along is omitted and it seems like miniplays with no connection but the characters. DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION. IT IS NOT WORTH EVEN A PENNY.

The Absolute Worst Edited Copy Ever!,

Jane Eyre Starring George C. Scott and Susannah York has all the potential of being an excellent movie. I truly believe that if the ORIGINAL UNEDITED version were allowed to surface and produced by a reputable company, this would be a 5 star movie. If George C. Scott knew what this Farce of a reproduction company has done to this movie, he would surely turn over in his grave, rise up and haunt the dickens out of them!

I was at first happy to see that it was available.
But I was very disappointed in the quality. I would have wanted to know that it was a really bad replica of the oringinal. The price should have given. that away. Only when I got it and started to watch did it say that it was a copy and that its quality was a reflection of the orginal that it was copied from. It was so bad that there was missed conversation in important parts from skipes and stops in the DVD. |
