Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 10-12-- An uninspired rehashing of information that has already appeared in various magazines and newspaper articles--most of which anyone interested in Fonda would have already read. In an unfocused and disjointed style, Collins repeatedly interjects that Fonda's father's lack of demonstrative affection had an overwhelming influence on her life. While this may be so, there is no other attempt to get at or understand what makes her "an American original." Fonda is uniquely her own person, but nothing in this book ever gets to the quintessential Jane. Readers learn more about Henry Fonda than Jane, although the subjects covered skip from him and his marriages to Jane's childhood, acting career, her marriages, her Viet Nam experiences, and her workout studios. There is no list of movies or plays she appeared in or produced, no chronology of important events--only a short bibliography, index, and a useless listing of "Notes." Bits of information are dully presented and decidedly lacking in personality--hardly a fitting treatment for a woman of such presence and charisma. --Louise M. Zuckerman, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
