3.0 out of 5 stars Oldie but goodie
Have been searching for this video tape for some time. Was hoping to find it in DVD format to no avail. My mom gave me a VCR so I decided to purchase this used tape. It is blurry but fine. I suspect its age has something to do with it being blurry. Anyway, I am thrilled to have it. I know the routine and that helps me to get up and just do it. Thanks, Amazon...

Jane Fonda's early videos were made with quality; they were lengthy and featured a strenuous workout that many exercise leaders today skip. However, with a need to compete with exercising models, tv queens, and every Joe Blow making exercise videos, the quality of her later video workouts, too, declined.

This 1985 90-minute tape features TWO workouts in ONE. The tape consists of a 35-minute BEGINNER'S with 12 minutes of aerobics. The 55 minute ADVANCED has 16 minutes of aerobics. You can choose to do this on alternate days if you are at the advanced stage. But the BEGINNER'S section is for beginners with at least some physical endurance or stamina.

What I prefer on this tape is the inclusion of toning and stretching all body parts. The warm-ups include neck, shoulder, arm streching including toe raises, tenson stretches, and including stretching the waist. Usually the newer exercise gurus don't include extensive warmup streching that Fonda does.

The floor work is tough, with leg lefts, that concentrate on toning the back and thighs. Stomach crunches are intense isolated movements that strengthen and tighten the hips and butt.

Once you master this, try the most difficult late 70's Jane Fonda tape ever, "The Jane Fonda Challenge." I have never done anybody's tape that is more vigorous than this.

If you are searching for quality workout tapes, stick with Jane Fonda EARLY tapes like this one, the "New Workout". You will work hard and you won't even notice the "leg warmers"......MzRizz

5.0 out of 5 stars The Jane Fonda New Workout Video is the best workout video!, January 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Jane Fonda's New Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The Jane Fonda New Workout Video is the best work out video that I have ever done! I lost my copy of the Jane Fonda New Workout Video about 7 years ago, but I thought for sure I would find another work out video that would be better. But everything I tried just didn't cut it. So when I recently decided to re-dedicate myself to a rigorous workout that would make me sweat, burn calories, and have fun while doing it, I ordered a used copy of the Jane Fonda New Workout Video. At first I thought it was going to be too outdated, but after going through the video, the fact that it is old did not cause a problem at all. The following is what I liked about this video the most:
1. Just after the first 15 minutes of the video I was sweating and enjoying the work out.
2. Jane Fonda gets you excited about exercising from the start. She maintains positive energy throughout the video and she is in great shape, so watching and listening to her makes you want to try to achieve what she has accomplished.
3. The dancers in the video, like Jane Fonda, are also very positive. Their smiling faces and high energy makes you excited about working out. They make you feel like you are part of the gang.
4. The steps are not difficult so you do not have to worry about doing them properly and there are a lot of repetitions so that you burn tons of calories quickly.
5. Finally, I really enjoyed when Leslie, one of the dancers in the video sings: "There's so much more to you than meets the eye." This aspect of the workout makes this video unique. This is because it personalizes your workout. It is not just some exercise people going through the motions. Rather Leslie's song makes you feel like Jane Fonda, Leslie, and the other dancers are personally trying to help you become a stronger, more in shape, positive individual.
I highly recommend this video to get back into shape and have fun while doing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A workout classic, May 26, 2004

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Jane Fonda's New Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought my first copy of this workout tape back 1985, after a nicely fit girl in one of my college classes told me she used Jane Fonda's workouts to stay in shape. So I got this tape, used it religously 3-4 times per week and found out what it was like to have a body and energy other people envied. It really is a great beginner tape, I'm what you might call choreographically challenged, but the moves in the workout were fairly simple and the aerobics just enough, at first. Eventually I decided the workout wasn't long enough so I put on a music cassette and made up my own moves, (moves best left unshared) continously rewinding the tape during play so that I could go longer. All that rewinding caused the tape to wear out, and I just ordered what will be my 3rd copy. I do alternate with other work out tapes to avoid monotony, but none have ever beat the stretches at the end of this workout, especially the hip stretches. I always come back to this tape when I need to get back my motivation.

5.0 out of 5 stars An 'Oldie' but a 'Goodie'!, January 9, 2004
By
This review is from: Jane Fonda's New Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I found this video buried at my parents', as others have, and fell in love with it. In high school I lost 80 POUNDS doing the beginners' portion 5 days a week. I lost the video last year during a move and have been scrambling to find it, until now.
I think I have it memorized!

The aerobics are to terrible music, but (according to jane) you can burn 400 calories in a half hour of her dancy moves. The floor portion is challenging without the use of weights-- your legs, abs, and butt will hurt! Many say her flexibility is daunting during the stretching portion-- but if you build up to her level, your legs especially will show it!

In the era of crunch, 8 minute abs, and Pilates, this stands as an awesome full body workout. Participate in the new, but for variety, try the old!! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Timeless Workout, July 27, 2004
This review is from: Jane Fonda's New Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I first bought a copy of Jane Fonda's New Workout when I was 25 years old and quickly got into the best shape of my life. I've also purchased other Jane Fonda videos, but I always come back to this one. It's very positive, supportive and you get the impression that Fonda simply cares about you.

I just wish it was available on DVD! My poor VHS formatted one is getting worn out.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Jane Fonda's best!, July 2, 1999

I LOVE this workout! And I'm not just saying this because I'm Jane Fonda's biggest fan! It's got fun moves and great music! Lesley Lillian sings her hit single "Do It" during the workout. After several days of doing the workout, I found myself singing along! I just love how there's a beginner workout and advanced all in one video! The only time I get to do the workout is when I rent it. It'd be a dream come true if I could purchase this excellent video!

5.0 out of 5 stars love this stupid tape!, October 15, 2003

I've never written a review on amazon before, but I had to add my name to the list of people asking for this video to be re-released! The tape was so cheesy and I couldn't get that stupid song out of my head, but I absolutely loved it! Its great for someone pressed for time because it packs a lot of workout into a small amount of time. I did this workout every day before high school and got into the best shape of my life. I was able to recite every word on the tape and sing that silly song word for word. Now after having my son, I have to get into shape again. Jane, please get this onto a dvd!

5.0 out of 5 stars addicted to it!, November 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Jane Fonda's New Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
look, i am the last guy you would expect to watch a video like this: it is almost 20 years old, incredibly kitsch, difficult to complete... but for some reason this video has sucked me in... i feel compelled to keep doing it over and over until the point where i can complete all of the exercises in the "advanced" workout...

the exercises are presented in a way that makes it very easy to follow the steps, even if you are terribly uncoordinated like me!... i started by doing the beginners' workout about a year ago (after finding this video buried at the bottom of a bookcase at my parents' house), and once i felt like i could do it, i moved on to the advanced workout, which is identical, but made longer by adding a few variations on the same exercises and increasing the number of repetitions... i feel it is the best workout you can get without using weights, since it targets virtually every part of the body at some point, though it is slightly low on the upper-body work... your legs, abs and waist will be exhausted, and your arms, shoulders and chest will at least remain taut, after this challenging tape... it was the first time i used an exercise tape at all, and because i enjoyed it so much, i've purchased others for the sake of variety, but in the end i only use jane fonda's new workout... hopefully i will get around to purchasing another of jane's tapes soon since i've watched this one to the point that the tape is going to tear apart!

the session consists of 1) warmup, mainly stretching; 2) upper-body work, mainly arms and shoudlers; 3) aerobics, with some arm and shoulder work, as well, and 4) a floor workout, with stretching, abdominals (difficult!), legs and buttocks worked, in that order...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, September 2, 2000

This is such a great video! I have been doing this video ever since it came out after I had my son. It is fun to do, very effective, and I like all the people that do the workout with Jane. I also like the two levels, beginners and advanced, so you can work up to the advanced. My VCR ate my tape recently and I, like many others, cannot find it anywhere and I am very upset by this. If anyone knows where I can get this can you please e-mail me at joni_36_99@yahoo.com? Please, re-release this video!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite workout video, April 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Jane Fonda's New Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I used this video about 10 years ago to get into the best shape I have ever been in. Somehow the video was lost and it made me crazy! I am working to get myself back in shape at age 41 after letting myself go for the past 5 years, and am so glad I found it here to help me! The best part is the floor workout for the abs, legs, and butt. I just skip past the aerobic part as I'm not wild about jumping around and get to the floor exercises. This is a classic. At first you'll have a hard time getting through the workout if you're not in very good shape and you'll be cussing at Jane, but when you get to working out regularly you'll love it.
