Excellent weight training here!,

This review is from: Jane Fonda's Toning and Shaping [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is an excellent weight training video. The exercises are demonstrated well and proper safety procedures are always priority to Jane and her partner. Simple to learn, fun to do, and not too much time. Alternating this with Jane's Low Impact Aerobic Workout video is guaranteed to get one into shape!

Sufficient workout with weights!,

This review is from: Jane Fonda's Toning and Shaping [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Jane Fonda's Toning and Shaping video is actually a 1987 workout previously called "Working out with Weights." The package was redesigned in 1993. The trainer is Dan Isaccson. He and Jane repeatedly warn you that if you can't do this or that because of pain, choose an alternative or don't do it. There are sufficient "15 sec. breaks" in between the lifting of weights. Plus there is intermittent stretching, instead of waiting til the end to stretch. The 85 minute video is structured in two segments, class I , 45- minute beginner intermediate and Class II, a 40 minute intermediate/advanced A bench is needed. The pamphlet suggests a picnic bench, good idea! Ankle weights and dumbbells are also used. Displayed on the screen are the weight sizes they use. At times you will see one of the people working on the floor as opposed to being on a bench. Each time the trainer or Jane goes into a new exercise, they inform us which muscle you are working. Focused here are hamstring curls, arm curls, lateral raises, triceps curl, pelvic thrusts, abdominal crunch. The armwork is similar to leg work, work on one arm, shift to the other, back and forth. Class II focuses on about the same as Class I, but there are those dreaded lunges, squats, and pushups. It is easy to wind your tape to get to the 2nd part of the tape if you need. It is certainly a good workout tape. .....MzRizz

Very good weight workout,
This review is from: Jane Fonda's Toning and Shaping [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is an excellent workout for all fitness levels. The classes can be alternated after six weeks if one feels ready to give it a try. Great workout because it hits all the areas of the body: arms, back, legs and those hard to reach aductor muscles on the inner thigh. Also those hard to reach lower abs. Great to do with or without weights. Jane and Dan are very clear in the instructions and they stress doing the exercises safely and effectively.

Fanastic Weight Workout,

I love this weight workout. I used to do this 14 years ago religiously, but then I quit doing it for many years. I just started using it again and it feels like I found a long lost friend. It is a great all around workout. You can get a whole body workout in 45 mins. You can't go wrong because they are always telling you the right way to execute the move. I do the first one, then the second one another day, then rewind the tape and start over again. I love the exercise for the quads where you lift and flex. When you get done with that one, you really feel it. The only thing is I don't have the ankle weights, so I just do them without. Do this tape 2-3 times a week and you will get stronger and shaplier. I LOVE it!!!

We love Jane Fonda Workouts! This one does not disappoint. I am over 60 and it isn't too hard for me, and I'm not in top condition! That's why I got the tape, and I know it's going to be great for helping me get into the best shape I can be! Media Shops is wonderful to work with also. Excellent customer service and prompt delivery.

Weight workout well ahead of it's time...,

This workout is a gem, I only discovered it in 2007 but it has become a favorite of mine. It was one I was always curious about but never looked into, but glad I did now. Jane Fonda, joined by Dan Isaacson are the hosts. It is a 90 minute video, split into 2 separate classes. The first one is more beginner, containing exercises that work only one joint at a time. Jane and Dan are joined by Jim and Terri in the first class. You start with a very short warmup (not more than 2 minutes) then proceed into weight work. They show on the screen the name of exercise, then how many sets and reps will be done, plus the amount of weight each participant is using. I found this to be a nice feature and one that I wish more instructors would use. The exercises in class one include: chest flies, concentration curls, front shoulder raises, shoulder shrugs, lateral raises, bent over rows, tricep curls, one arm rows, quad extensions, hamstring curls, calf raises, pelvic lifts, side leg lifts and abdominal cruches/reverse curls. You will do between 1-3 sets of each exercise, anywhere from 8-25 reps depending on the exercise. The higher number of reps are for the ab exercises at the end, most of the weight exercises contain 8-15 reps. Class two is more advanced, and contains exercises that work more than one joint at a time. This time Jane and Dan are joined by Frank and Conni, they do the same warmup (even use the same music) basically the same format, just a little more difficult exercises. The exercises in class two include: squats, upright rows, lunges(stationary), chest press, bicep curls, overhead press, one arm rows, pushups, calf raises, triceps extensions, hamstring curls and abdominal crunches/reverse curls. I think both classes are really good and thorough. I like Jane's teaching style and Dan is a pleasant instructor as well. He and Jane seem to have a good rapport. They offer lots of tips and form pointers, plus there is a brief rest period between exercises, plus some stretches. The video is from 1987 and was also released under the name "Workout with Weights", the outfits are dated as is the music. The music isn't too bad, each exercise has a different song, some songs are pretty bad but for the most part it's tolerable for me. Overall, I think it's a very nice production. I would rate this workout 4 and a half stars, the warmup could be a little longer, aside from that no complaints. It is beginner to intermediate level, advanced will not find it challenging though one could make it harder by increasing their weights. I definitely recommend this workout, after years of trying different instructors, I find that I prefer the more simple, straightforward style of weightlifting and this definitely fits the bill. Plus I am coming off a year plus of inactivity, this is a great video for all levels but especially for those starting (or restarting in my case) a weight training routine. It is an oldie but a definite goodie.

This is the best weight lifting tape I have run across in over 25 years of home exercising. I have done it all these years and never get tired of it. There are 2 separate routines on the tape so you get double for your money. Some of the same exercises are done in the 2nd routine as the first you just use heavier weights. The tape is very organized, Jane's personality is not obnoxious or boring and the "expert" who does it with her is a very well known personal trainer in the Hollywood set. I highly recommend this tape!

This tape may be from 1987 but it's functional for the future and beyond!
I used to work out with this tape years ago, borrowing it from the library. I absolutely loved how Dan and Jane warned about pain and had alternatives to using weights in certain workouts, because even though you're not using a weight, you still are working out your body. Sometimes they're a little silly in their workout, making noises like, "Woo!" but it makes you laugh and relax, have a good time, and you're not stressed out about having to exercise. Class 1 is a great startup for working out and yes, Class II has the dreaded pushups and squats, but once you start doing them, Jane and Dan make sure your body is your reward! I also enjoyed the music, being upbeat and inspirational, with relaxing piano during the stretch. Both had soothing voices and encouraging messages. I'm so glad I was able to find this tape, I don't have to borrow it anymore cause I own it! Buy this tape and feel the burn (but make sure it doesn't hurt too much!) |
