Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

It’s not often you find a good nonfiction writer also blessed with the gift of cartooning, but Venezia pulls off that double duty in the Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Inventors & Scientists series. Taking on pioneers of all stripes, Venezia combines a chatty text (characters get “freaked out” or are “super-successful”) with a prudent mixture of period photographs and rascally cartoons. Jane Goodall paints an appealing picture of the young woman who developed a keen interest in animals after she was evacuated to the British countryside in WWII. Shots of the always-photogenic Goodall lounging among wild chimps never fail to enchant, and her discovery of such chimp traits as tool use and warfare make a strong case for her significance. Though the back matter is thin, this is a fun package that will keep things fresh, even for reluctant readers. Grades 2-4. --Daniel Kraus

5.0 out of 5 stars Mike Venezia is branching out, March 15, 2010
This review is from: Jane Goodall: Researcher Who Champions Chimps (Getting to Know the World's Greatest Inventors & Scientists) (Library Binding)
If you are familiar with Mike Venezia's previous books, you will immediately recognize the winning formula here. Interspersed with pages of the typical biographical information and photographs are lighthearted stories of things Jane Goodall did as a child, illustrated with funny cartoons.

Most children find the less-serious approach very appealing, and these books are wonderful for reluctant readers. Adults shouldn't be fooled though, Venezia's book does an excellent job of covering the essentials of Jane Goodall's life. One can't help being inspired by an eager young secretary who goes to Africa in search of adventure and ends up a famous ethologist and world authority on chimpanzees.

A perfect fit for any library, this book is sure to attract readers.
