Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Written in 1847, this novel remains a favorite, especially among younger readers and listeners who continue to be entranced by the young Jane and her mysterious Mr. Rochester. The story of an unhappy orphan and her life as a governess at Thornfield is filled with difficulty, including a shocking revelation on her wedding day. The happy ending finally arrives, though, and Jane and Rochester are united forever. Long criticized as being melodramatic and contrived, Jane Eyre has nonetheless become a romantic classic and is often the book that introduces students to serious literature. Bronte's suspense-filled plot adapts well to the audio format. This version, although abridged, omits nothing of importance. Juliet Stevenson, a Royal Shakespeare Company associate, reads with the drama the story demands and makes each character emerge with life and energy. Recommended for general audiences.

I had several men try to dissuade me from reading _Jane Eyre_, but I'm glad I didn't listen. This is not an exclusively "female" novel; Jane Eyre's conflicts are universal: feelings of insecurity, feelings of jealousy; the temptation to give up what one truly wants for something less desirable but more easily obtainable. Women don't have a monopoly on these struggles. Any man with the slightest drop of romance and sensibility in his veins should be able to enjoy this book.

If you have never read this great work of art, then I can only say that once you do, you will never come across another which compares. I still have not, though I have tried to find anything as deeply moving, meaningful, beautiful a story, and one so wonderfully well- written as Jane Eyre. My favorite movie version is the A & E version filmed a few years ago (1997, I believe) with Cirian Hinds, the Shakespearean actor, as Mr. Rochester. His portrayal captured most closely my impression of the character, from reading the novel, and I adored the whole script, and the beautiful use of language in that film. Also, the setting was wonderful. If you can find it, get that version. The story is so meanigful, don't leave this world without ever having read Jane Eyre.

a sad story about the life of an orphan and how her life turned out. It is a tender love story about Jane Eyre and MR. Rochester and how hard it was for them to be together. It is a very mature book but easy reading.

Although some critics have hailed Jane Eyre as the first great romance novel. I find that it is ONLY a romance novel. The character of Jane Eyre is quite inspiring at times. She is self-reliant, moral, and just. But at times she still manages to alienate the reader with her conduct (i.e. when she reproaches Hannah's conduct). If the reader fails to identify with Jane, then the overall impact of the book is greatly diminished.
Additionally, the overuse of deus ex machina (nature intervening to solve problems), pathetic fallacy (nature imitating the characters' feelings), and supernatural events (to foreshadow coming plot twists) really tarnishes the plot. It destroys the credibility of the plot -- which is central to a romantic novel -- and slows the overall pace of the story. Although such devices should be used to emphasize important events, their overuse merely weakens their intended effect.
Overall, Jane Eyre is a well written romantic novel; I feel it is worthy of perusal on a rainy afternoon. However, if the reader is looking for a book with more pith, they may wish to reconsider their choice.

JULIE KOLODZIEJCZYK I just have to say that the reason why this book was so good and the reson why it ended the it did and the reason why it was so emotional was because of one thing: the thought process, although extrodinary, it was kept hidden and not said. Jane and edward especially thought millions of extreme emotions, but never said a word untill later. Although this did not mean that they were not honest. they were quite honest, especially jane, she always told edward the truth, like when she felt uncomfortable or how she did not like his appearence. The only thing that both of them lacked was communicated this extreme emotions. She was honest and told that she was not comfortable, but did not tell him, why she was uncomfotable. it is completely natural and completely how i would have reacted. that is what made this book so good. We as humans could relate to it. we as humans do that all the time. We rarely tell the truth, and even more rare, tell our reasons behind the truth! JULIE KOLODZIEJCZYK

I have found that this book portrays a variety of emotions felt by just about everyone. After having talked to some other friends of mine who had also read the book, I've found this to be true. It's too bad that movies can produce every last scene just the way it is in the book, but then again most poeple's attention spans dimminsh after about 2 hours. Some of the voacabulary was on the confusing side, as my English is not very good, but I particularly appreciated the fact that an index was provided in the back of the book This helped to clarify some of the religious references in Jane Eyre's story. Overall, I believe that it was a well-written book. Sometimes I find that authors, particularly science fiction are very vague in writing into words the picture they see in their mind. Only the best writters at this are "good". This book took me back to a time and place a century in the past. Excelent work of yours, Miss Bronte.
