The absolutely standard reference,
By Michael A. Duvernois (Minneapolis, MN United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Jane's Fighting Ships (Hardcover)
This is the basic source of information on warships. Updated every year and very expensive. It's an exceptional resource and if you NEED a current copy you probably have one. Otherwise...
Here's how to access this information for a lower cost: - Your library may subscribe - Post-cold war, there aren't that many changes each year, so copies of 3-5 years old are not totally unreasonable for the hobbiest - That same library gets rid of old copies - Older copies sometimes appear in the discount bookstores - An older copy plus the internet sometimes works for information searches - Jane's website has some of the info available for free - Also check the Naval Institute Press guides, some of them cover the same material, often cheaper

The definitive guide to the world's navies!,
By A Fan (VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jane's Fighting Ships (Hardcover)
Jane's is the definitive commercial guide to the world's navies. You won't find anything more comprehensive or informative available commercially. It includes photos and drawings of the world's major combat ships as well as providing remarkably accurate details regarding shipboard systems and capabilities. Just about every US Navy ship keeps a copy of Jane's available for reference. Of course for the price it had better be good.
