Very complete but still disappointing for a must have, May 20, 2008
This review is from: Jane's Infantry Weapons, 1994-95 (Hardcover)
I just received my copy of the Jane's Infantry Weapons 1994-95 after a long time I've spent searching for this edition in particular.
I'm an admirer of the late Ian V. Hogg and this book was his last entry for Jane's, for this reason it has a big affective value to me.
The book is, indeed, a very complete textbook, comprising not only small arms and support weapons, but also anti-tank, anti-aircraft and other weapon systems commonly associated to armoured/protected vehicles, as machine and automatic cannons.
The chapter on the ammunitions (including rifle, launched and hand grenades, cannon and mortar shells etc.) is very complete and almost satisfying even for the most exalted of the military buff out there.
What I found disappointing, however, was the chapter I was interested the most: anti-tank rocket-launchers, guided missiles and recoilless rifles.
I expected to find the complete (or almost complete) stats on every such weapons but the data presented where lacking essential information as to the penetration power of the warhead and other such data.
The most strange of thing was that the weapon systems more deficient were not those produced and fielded by - for instance - the Russians or the Chinese, but the systems deployed by U.S. and British armed forces... even the ubiquitous TOW and Milan lack these information.
But the most ridiculous deficiency concern such hi-tech equipment like the 3,5" Bazooka and the M106A1 recoilless rifle!
Come on!
Who in the world and in his right mind could think that such antique pieces of crap (pun intended `cause I do love such old glories) are still strategic secrets anymore, especially after the U.S. government sold and gave away the entire stock all the world over?
And, as an afterthought, did not the Jane's Infantry Weapons series of books made especially for the technical and command staff of the armies in western (US allied) countries? So why withhold such kind of information from your friends?
I still treasure this book for its historical value, but I could sincerely find more accurate data on other, decidedly less costly, books out there.

Jane's Infantry Weapons has absolutely no competition!, November 10, 1997
By A Customer
If you are a serious military small arms enthusiast, current or past member of the military, or a student of modern military science and technology, I guarantee you that Jane's Infantry Weapons is the world's best-ever source for information about military small arms. Thorough, accurate, and up to date information about every modern type of hand held military weapon is presented in this book.
Do keep in mind however, that this book is specifically intended for those individuals who are very serious about the technologically-oriented aspects of military weaponry; not those who merely seek a pictorial gun book. Advanced students of modern defense technology, however, will find that this large-format reference book is superior to all others in it's category. This book gives the reader instant access to a vast wealth of indispensible information on each weapon's specifications, performance, country of origin, current users, production status, development, method of operation, and much more. Also for the reader's use and enjoyment are hundreds of detailed line drawings, diagrams, and photographs.
I have found that there is simply no other book that can even compare to Jane's Infantry Weapons when it comes to the area of military small arms. This book is a plethora of valuable and in-depth knowledge, written and edited by an educated author who knows his subject. You simply will not find any better book on the topic of small arms--anywhere!
