5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the...
80's!! Okay, who doesn't love the 80's? Well, I know there are a lot of people who don't love it, but at least there is a nice CD for those of us who do. This is a very fun album, with a very young Miss Jan.; her age (around 16!) does show, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means the songs are more "bubble gum" as someone else has said. 3.0 out of 5 stars A nice teen pop-soul record
I like this album a lot. As another customer said, it's very representative of the 80s sound. It wasn't quite the failure that many historians make it out to be. "Young Love" made the top 10 on the R&B chart, and "Say You Do" made the top thirty. Not too bad for a 16-year-old girl. It's got a lot of significance in that she worked with some of...

I like this album a lot. As another customer said, it's very representative of the 80s sound. It wasn't quite the failure that many historians make it out to be. "Young Love" made the top 10 on the R&B chart, and "Say You Do" made the top thirty. Not too bad for a 16-year-old girl. It's got a lot of significance in that she worked with some of the best producers of the time. Rene and Angela ("My First Love," "I'll Be Good") produced the first half of the record, including the above-mentioned tracks. Their trademark sound is very very strong on those tracks. She also worked with producers from the Solar Records camp, the people responsible for the success of groups like Shalamar and the Whispers. So there's quite a bit here to savor, and it's a good picture of her start as an artist.

There are some great songs on the CD, but you have to have the CD to give them a chance. Most people will enjoy this CD, as long as you like one of the many "things" listed above. There are a few other reviews that go more in-depth on each track -- I just wanted to give an overall opinion -- if you still can't decide, I suggest referencing the reviews, or just buy it, since Janet's the best :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Debut Album, April 3, 2001
This review is from: Janet Jackson (Audio CD)
This is where it began, the career of Janet Jackson, she was 16 at the time of its release, and who knew that she would acheive so much in her career. While this certainly isnt her best work, and it didn't receive much attention, its still a fun album to listen to. The songs are infectuous. The album is very Jackson sounding, with songs like Say You Do, Youll Never Find (A Love Like Mine) and Young Love, and theres also some ballads here like Love And My Best Friend, and Forever Yours. Her voice isnt that strong here but its still nice, I mean this is her debut album and she didnt hit it big until Control in 1986, but this is still worth checking out.

Janet's first album is nothing but bubblegum pop....and Janet has such a fresh and sweet voice on this album. "Young Love" and "Say You Do" are my favorites!

5.0 out of 5 stars Teen Janet, March 22, 2007
This review is from: Janet Jackson (Audio CD)
This album is surprisingly very good considering that Miss Jackson doesn't even consider it as a part of her recording history. She shouldn't just because it wasn't a hit record. I really like the songs on this cd and it's a pretty solid pre-80's "bubble gum" pop album. My favorites are "You'll Never Find(A love Like Mine), "Young Love", "don't Mess Up This Good Thing", "Come Give Your Love To Me". SAWEET!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Jackson's Very First Album, August 10, 2006

My first exposure to Janet Jackson the singer was in 1982 on the TV show Diff'rent Strokes. On the show, she played Willis' girlfriend Charlene who (ironically) was an aspiring singer. She sang a portion of "Young Love" on the show and shortly thereafter this album (her 1st) was released.

This is an album of standard but well produced R&B/pop songs showcasing young Janet's soft, sweet voice. On funkier tunes like "Say You Do", "Don't Mess Up This Good Thing" & the aforementioned "Young Love", Janet sings sweetly without over-doing it. The same can be said for more pop-ish tunes like "The Magic Is Working" & "You'll Never Find (A Love Like Mine)". But her soft voice really shines on the ballads "Love & My Best Friend" and especially "Forever Yours". "Come Give Your Love To Me" is an 80's new-wave flavored tune that Janet sounds cute singing.

I give this album 4 stars (instead of my usual 5) because although Janet sounds great on this album, this was her first and she really hadn't found 'her' sound until she hooked up with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and began recording the albums that would make her the superstar she is today (Control, Rhythm Nation 1814 and so on). However, this is still a cool album. I have it on cassette and I'm considering ordering it on CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review for "Janet Jackson" by Janet Jackson, November 16, 2004

This was a good attempt for a first album. Although none of the cuts are nearly as appealing as those on her more popular "Control" and "Rhythm Nation 1814", it's worth a listen for any Janet Jackson fan. Her voice can actually be heard in the songs, and it is actually pretty good; Most of her popular songs drown out her voice in rhythms. The only complaint I have for this album is with the first track "Say You Do", which goes on for nearly 7 minutes... less then half of those 7 minutes has actual singing, while the rest of the time is just instrumental production. Besides that, all the songs are songs that you can listen to for enjoyment.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Primary" Jackson, before she took "CONTROL", October 20, 2002
This review is from: Janet Jackson (Audio CD)
While her voice hasn't actually changed much since the release of her debut recording, Jackson's choice of producers has. Thus, the formation of the Jackson/Harris/Lewis triumvirate has developed the novice singer on this album into the powerhouse superstar that she is today. This recording shows a star "in training".

And, before I get bombarded from others, for implying that Miss Janet is not a good singer, I think that she is one of the most entertaining performers in history, although a little "weak" in the vocal delivery department.
