If your prof does not recommend this - ignore her and get this. The first chapter alone will get you through most college level immuno courses. The rest is at an almost-phd level but is still really well written and understandable, with the most important thing - accurate and memorable pictures.

As a grad student with zero immunological background working on a lot of immunology, I finally got fed up with not understanding the jargon and bought this book. It's the best money I've spent on school yet! There are extensive figures and legends that reiterate concepts, and the appendices are bar non. There is an appendix that includes every cytokine, its function, and what diseases deficiencies or knock-outs of the cytokine result in (a life-saver for me!). I highly, highly recommend it, despite its VERY human emphasis and the fact that I work on various, non-model (mouse, etc) species.

I highly recommend this text to any profession, undergrad, and/or grad interested in pursuing a career in immunology, microbiology, or molecular. It is very detailed and easy to read. Plus, if you buy new version, the CD is very useful to watch video clips of important, yet complex topics.

For me, it's the best Immunology book for a course; it's very didactic, easyreading, motivating when you read it. The Chapter of Innate Immunology is excelent as well as the glosaries.

In my graduate course, Advanced Topics in Immunology, the students are required to take turns teaching the course with no other guidance than the title of the topic for the week. We have to build a lecture based on our own search of information. Of all of the immunology texts I have searched through, Janeway's is the most comprehensive, well organized and easy to understand. The illustrations really bring home the points of the chapter. I recommend this text to anyone interested in a full understanding of immunology.

I have never taken immunology before. Given that, this book was required for my graduate level immunology course. This book is a great reference for the beginner immunologist, as it does not assume the reader has any prior knowledge of the topic but still offers the level of detail required to be successful at the graduate level. Text is supported by ample (and useful) figures and isn't insufferable to read. It has been a great help to me so far! Only draw back is that it is not hard cover so it doesn't stand up well to the wear and tear of toting to and from class.

The prior editions of this book have been great- i could have never survived my immuno courses without it. I am currently taking another graduate level immunology class and this book is indespensible- add along a few journal articles and you are set. So whether you are just in the begining of learning immunology or in grad school this book must be in your reference collection.

I was going to write a so-so review for the 6th edition, and then got the 7th edition, and they've fixed all the things that were concerning me. Now it seems they have an excellent text bar none.It is extremely comprehensive for the upper division undergraduate and introductory graduate levels immunology classes. Medical applications are included throughout, as well as interesting and helpful historical material. One small negative, they err on the side of including a lot of detail. I would have liked them to filter out some of the more detailed sequence of interactions, or they could have put it to the side as a box. Please try that in the next edition. They ommitted much of the research stuff that other texts sometimes includes. For example, some texts go to great lengths introducing a research question which takes up pages and pages just to make a point of something that is currently relevant. This book discusses the research process but not too much. I like that. Others may not. Extremely readible, top marks for copious, well done and informative illustrations. Other's mention the sequence of the chapters. It didn't seem to be an issue, but it may just be me. My criticism of the previous edition was bad editing. It made the book hard to read to the point where some major issues were incomprehensible just because of the writing/editing. That has been fixed. Some books crank out new editions with just a new cover and higher price. The 7th edition is a big step forward.

strange organization,
By Juliet Mills "Juliet" (Richmond, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Janeway's Immunobiology (Immunobiology: The Immune System (Janeway)) (Paperback)
The book has a lot of great material, however, the organization of it is confusing. Things are often mentioned at the beginning of the chapter and then I find myself reading about the exact same thing once or twice later in the chapter. It seems as though they get into a little detail in the beginning and you think you have the whole story, then a few pages later they get into even deeper detail and you are confused trying to fit the pieces together.

The first chapter alone gives you a more or less complete introduction to all aspects of immunology and each chapter thereafter goes on in further detail with great clarity. Excellent book, in my opinion.
