Book Description

June 1, 2007 Noble Warriors Series (Book 2)
In joining the warrior society of the Nomana, Seeker, Morning Star, and the Wildman have achieved everything they thought they desired. Yet, as hidden doubts develop, the three friends find themselves pulled in separate directions. Seeker has gained more power in their training than he or anyone ever imagined, and with this, a new responsibility that isolates him from the others. Morning Star is consumed with unexpected feelings of love for a friend and begins to lose faith in her abilities. The Wildman’s hunger for power puts him at odds with the teachings of the Nomana, and he struggles to understand his purpose. But the three heroes’ fates again intertwine when an evil plan is set in motion that would destroy everything they have ever known, and this enemy is one that the Nomana may not be able to stand up to alone. A story of friendship and love, strength and courage, faith and redemption, Jango is a mesmerizing sequel to the acclaimed Seeker.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

After intense isolation training, a Nomana novice named Seeker after Truth, manifests his true power along with a giddy, half-mad state he calls jango—a word he believes he has made up. But when Seeker meets a person named Jango, the stranger's prophetic words hint that the young hero's subconscious may have revealed the key to his current, crucial mission. Meantime, fellow novices Morning Star and Wildman struggle to heed the calls of their own destinies. The book's numerous protagonists walk paths pitted with uncertainty and danger, converging as the Nomana face enemies on three fronts. Themes of true faith and the corruptibility of power feel weighty and deliberate at times, but Nicholson, a successful screenwriter, knows how to entertain: a bumbling suitor's overtures are priceless ("Your mouth is as soft as a foal's, sucking the udder of love"), and one evildoer expires in a memorably horrific manner. Well plotted and paced, if a bit programmatic, this follow-up to Seeker (2006), book 1 in the Noble Warriors sequence, won't disappoint returning readers. Mattson, Jennifer

Review

Three teen heroes of Seeker (2006) leave the Nomana within days of each other. Wildman dives off a cliff to escape punishment; Morning Star accompanies Seeker to follow Wildman; Seeker, betrayed by someone in the Nomana community, leaves to find his nemeses and kill them. All three struggle with betrayal and self-doubt, and their reactions to this show both the strengths and weaknesses of their characters. Nicholson's episodic structure tells the story of the Nomana exiles as well as introducing new characters, both attractive and not. There is a feeling of circularity: Seeker leaves the home he loves to return later to save it; Wildman leaves to escape being stripped of his personality and memories only to return to the Spikers, his original people. There are many mysteries: the role played by an old man named Jango, the nature of the Nomanas' enemies, the Savanters and the nature of the Nomana god. This splendid read will both satisfy and tantalize lovers of the first book and send newly introduced readers to look for it.
