'm not sure about you but when my children are on a break from school we pull out every stop possible to keep they entertained and away from the dreaded "I'm Bored!"

This year we did that with the help of their new tablets and a few e-books. The one they seemed to enjoy the most was Janie and the Magic Box Christmas By Julia Dweck.

Not only were the illustrations by Terry Sirrell amazing and caught all of my children's attention immediately but the story itself was one that peaked their interest because it was told from the view of Janie a cute little dog who was worried about the fate of Christmas because of how hot her town is.

My children immediately related to this problem since we live in the South and we had 70 degree weather a mere 2 days before Christmas. They wondered too if the lack of snow would somehow impact their Christmas Day wishes. My children loved how the story flowed with the rhyming and funny take on Janie getting so upset when she realizes the heat may be there to stay!

It wasn't until the very end that I asked my children how they liked the story since we were all so excited as we read. Each one from my 6 year old to my 2 year old wanted to read more about Janie. Needless to say, this book became a nightly read throughout out Holiday break (even days past Christmas) and I can guarantee Janie will be making another appearance next year!

Here in the Deep South, it's hard to imagine having snow for Christmas (or any other time, for that matter), but where young Janie lives, they not only don't have snow as usual, it's over a hundred degrees, and the TV announcer says they may cancel Christmas this year. When Janie falls and hits her head, she dreams of snow falling both inside the house and outside. But everything turns out all right, as Santa hops in his sleigh and makes his rounds to deliver toys to kids all around the world.

The imaginative illustrated story with simple rhyming text should be good bedtime reading for preschoolers.

I liked the story line in this book, makes you think of all the things that surround us that make up the wonderful Christmas season. That cold cool air that wonderful snow that we all love to shovel HAHA. Janie and the Magic Box Christmas is a wonderful surprise in the box. Starts out hot with Christmas being cancelled then Janie gets a surprise that changes everything. My children were lite up the entire book! How wonderful was this for me to see. Beautifully written, wonderfully illustrated a must have if you have children ages 3-6 years of age.

This book was fun to read and the rhymes were delightful.
I would have preferred it in a hard cover version, but then I am old school.

What happens when there is not a snowflake in sight, the grass is browning, and the thermometer keeps climping?
How will Santa be able to deliver Christmas?
Janie and her dog share a wonderful winter's tale.

I liked this book from the moment I seen the dog peeping out from under the Christmas tree! Book is a play on the classic "Twas the Night before Christmas" given it ends with the line "Merry Christmas to all, etc..." including great rhymes and artwork. For more fun, free children's Christmas books as of 12/13/13 please see my reviews for :

1) "Santa Ate My Gingerbread House" by Mark I Sutherland
2) "Lucius and the Christmas Star" by Jim Long
3) ""Joja's Christmas Day" by Sujatha Lalgudi
4) "Charlie the Tree" by Michelle Thompson
5) ""Ticky Tack the Littlest Reindeer" by Ironpower Publishing
6) "A House Before Christmas" by Betty Antibus

Merry Christmas!

By Gina Hott on March 6, 2013

Hott Synopsis: Janie can't believe that a heat wave is cancelling Christmas this year. Grumbling is getting her nowhere, all is still melting, and she's sure that Santa's lounging on a beach. Until Janie opens a box and magic starts to fly.

Hott Review: I adored the rhyming! It was too much fun! All of the pre-schoolers (1-6) I read this to loved this story. We read it again and again!
