Christmas is coming, but the thermometer is rising to 100 degrees. Janie looks at her green yard and fills up with woe. One day ‘till Christmas with no sign of snow! Not a fleck, not a speck, not a white spot around. Each blade of grass sticks straight up from the ground. When a curious freckled-box arrives on Janie's doorstep, she opens it, releasing a whirlwind of mischievous freckles. Join Janie as she follows the freckles on a wild chase to save Christmas. This rhyming tale is told with humor and heart. It is destined to become a holiday classic for generations to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Janie's imagination at Christmas time December 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Here in the Deep South, it's hard to imagine having snow for Christmas (or any other time, for that matter), but where young Janie lives, they not only don't have snow as usual, it's over a hundred degrees, and the TV announcer says they may cancel Christmas this year. When Janie falls and hits her head, she dreams of snow falling both inside the house and outside. But everything turns out all right, as Santa hops in his sleigh and makes his rounds to deliver toys to kids all around the world.

The imaginative illustrated story with simple rhyming text should be good bedtime reading for preschoolers.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Christmas and Beyond... January 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
'm not sure about you but when my children are on a break from school we pull out every stop possible to keep they entertained and away from the dreaded "I'm Bored!"

This year we did that with the help of their new tablets and a few e-books. The one they seemed to enjoy the most was Janie and the Magic Box Christmas By Julia Dweck.

Not only were the illustrations by Terry Sirrell amazing and caught all of my children's attention immediately but the story itself was one that peaked their interest because it was told from the view of Janie a cute little dog who was worried about the fate of Christmas because of how hot her town is.

My children immediately related to this problem since we live in the South and we had 70 degree weather a mere 2 days before Christmas. They wondered too if the lack of snow would somehow impact their Christmas Day wishes. My children loved how the story flowed with the rhyming and funny take on Janie getting so upset when she realizes the heat may be there to stay!

It wasn't until the very end that I asked my children how they liked the story since we were all so excited as we read. Each one from my 6 year old to my 2 year old wanted to read more about Janie. Needless to say, this book became a nightly read throughout out Holiday break (even days past Christmas) and I can guarantee Janie will be making another appearance next year!

I liked this book from the moment I seen the dog peeping out from under the Christmas tree! Book is a play on the classic "Twas the Night before Christmas" given it ends with the line "Merry Christmas to all, etc..." including great rhymes and artwork. For more fun, free children's Christmas books as of 12/13/13 please see my reviews for :

1) "Santa Ate My Gingerbread House" by Mark I Sutherland
2) "Lucius and the Christmas Star" by Jim Long

4) "Charlie the Tree" by Michelle Thompson
5) ""Ticky Tack the Littlest Reindeer" by Ironpower Publishing
6) "A House Before Christmas" by Betty Antibus

Merry Christmas!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! March 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Hott Synopsis: Janie can't believe that a heat wave is cancelling Christmas this year. Grumbling is getting her nowhere, all is still melting, and she's sure that Santa's lounging on a beach. Until Janie opens a box and magic starts to fly.

Hott Review: I adored the rhyming! It was too much fun! All of the pre-schoolers (1-6) I read this to loved this story. We read it again and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars There is no Christmas without surprise! February 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As we know, Christmas is not complete without a surprise. Julia Dweck’s book, “Janie and the Magic Box Christmas,” proved it. Janie was almost sure that Christmas would be canceled because of an unexpected heat wave. However, a box suddenly appeared and released snow freckles all over the place, turning everything into a real Christmas. The freckles even took the shape of Christmas stockings and wrapped Janie from head to toe. The freckles made many other surprises, which added to a wonderful Christmas for everyone. This is truly an amusing and thrilling Christmas book that you can read to your children. Thank you, Julia, for the wonderful story!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Christmas reading December 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Janie and the Magic Box Christmas is a cute eBook that kids like mine can relate to--temperatures so warm it doesn't feel like Christmas:

"Janie looks at her green yard and fills up with woe. One day `till Christmas with no sign of snow! Not a fleck, not a speck, not a white spot around. Each blade of grass sticks straight up from the ground."

Janie wishes for snow, and my kids were delighted to discover what happens next. We loved the fun illustrations and Dr. Seuss-ish rhyme. I'm shaking things up by adding some eBooks to our read-aloud time, and this one is very affordable for Kindle. We'll be keeping it on our Christmas countdown reading list for next year, too.
