Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6--Both of these series entries have lively narrative styles and attractive full-color photographs. Rio de Janeiro's casual, upbeat tone reflects the never-ending energy of the city itself. The major topics discussed are: geography, population, religion, ethnic blending, history, holidays and festivals, major attractions, and flora and fauna. A two-page spread on poverty depicts a city in which one-fourth of the population lives in shantytowns with no telephones, electricity, or running water. Mexico City covers children's games, street vendors and entertainers, history, earthquakes, art, bullfighting, parks, and famous landmarks. Stein also touches on poverty, unemployment, pollution, and overcrowded schools. Oddly, Mexico City's history is detailed only through the Aztec period. Spanish occupation and the current independent era are almost completely ignored, although a chronology does include some of the major historical events of these two periods. Both titles will make solid additions to library collections.

Review

"Solid information for report writers. These books describe the geography, history, tourist attractions, and personalities of these cities, bringing to life their international importance in a way that students can understand."

5.0 out of 5 stars One of a delightful series of books, June 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rio de Janiero (Cities of the World (Childrens Press Hardcover)) (Library Binding)
A delightful series of books about world cities. Unfortunately several are out of print, but through Amazon I was able to obtain one. The hardcover books contain photographs, maps, pronounciation guides, and information about customs, food, history and specific sites of interest. I found the book suitable for upper elementary/middle school age and informative for this grandmother!
