Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered edition of this 1967 release from the singer/songwriter, appearing on CD for the first time in it's entirety. Ian captured the frustrations, awkwardness, and inner turmoil of teenaged existence with a clarity and maturity well beyond her tender age. Recorded when she was just 15 years old, Janis Ian was released in 1967 with the controversial Top 20 hit single 'Society's Child.' Recorded with some of New York's finest session musicians, including Artie Butler on harpsichord, piano, and organ, Vinnie Bell and Al Gorgoni on guitars, Joe Mack on bass, and Buddy Saltzman on drums, Janis Ian hit the Billboard charts at #29. The full-color, 16-page booklet also includes previously unpublished photos and exhaustive liner notes that feature the participation of Janis and others. Now Sounds. 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Creator of my Empathy November 2, 2010
By Mark
Format:Audio CD
To search for someone who has an innate ability to create life in song one has only to discover Janis Ian. There are very few others in the artistic world of music and sound that can compare with this Master of the scientific realm of the alphabetical and numerical entities. For afterall it is the magical formulation of these two sciences which gives us that auditory pleasure which we seek in order to express as an emotional outlet what we feel on a daily basis. We seek music to deal with ANY or ALL of the emotions we are feeling in relation to that particular experience with which we happen to be dealing with. Dolly Parton and Dottie Rambo are other Masters with this inherent God given ability. A day of my life does not pass by that these Artistic Musical Goddesses do not in some way influence the course in which my life takes from day to day. If I need a laugh, a cry, to relax, to make a decision, to visit and experience a past memory, to feel a love again, or to reminisce about a friend, Janis Ian is as far away as my CD music shelf. Ever since I can remember as from my childhood to now in the prime of my life, what Janis has created, in that I have related. She is one of those rare priceless jewels of which only one will ever exist. Whatever your emotion or present situation, Janis has a description of it in a song. She is a very down to earth person which is why she can relate to the common folk. Her music can be your best friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Janis Ian by Janis Ian August 4, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Early Janis Ian offering. From 1967 when she was a teenager. Recording quality is what the industry did with new artists. More Recent recordings are far superior. I have most of her music and I am a diehard fan. She is as talented as any Singer Songwriter with a wonderful voice. Janis plays guitar and piano as well as any composer/performer. Super Artist.

It was obvious that she has truly evolved and became a one-of-a-kind artist.

A classic that takes me back to lonely times in the barracks. I managed to see her in a small concert in Tucson held in an abandoned church.
