Second only to Living Under June,

All of Jann's CDs are good. But, I can't lie, the last couple---although each song was good---as a whole got a little monotonous. Great lyrics, great voice...just a little unexciting. Not this one!
What great sounds. Great instrumentation to compliment the great vocals and lyrics. Great CD! If you like Jann because of Living Under June...you should like this one. If you like her because of her last few CDs...you should LOVE this one. :)

A great return to form.......,

thought Jann could never top "Living under June", wouldn't really want her to repeat the same style but this new collection finds the Canadian song stylist dishing out some
uptempo grooves along side her trademark melancholy heartaches, but what makes this set stand out is her willingness to explore some new sounds without chasing away fans who expect to hear familiar. It nice to hear favorite artists expand there sound and come up with a gem like this, much like the new Bonnie Raitt "Souls Alike" the heart and soul is still left to the music but some fresh air is thrown into the mix to challange listeners who come to expect the same old, same old, Jann Arden continues to stand out with her one of a kind style.

Life Is Sweet(er),
By
This review is from: Jann Arden (Audio CD)
Jann Arden has always written songs with a bitter-sweet edge and with her new cd she has found a fresher, sweeter sound, to take the edge off of the bitter.
Her strong voice is as clear and cuts as deep as ever. Her lyrics get to the heart and soul of her message, and her listeners, as always. The only thing that's different from her past recordings, is the lushness of production and the use of bright and colorful sounds to caress her passionate vocals. "Where No One Knows Me" should be a hit single, as well as "All Of This"...Both songs rock sweetly...and no less, "Rock This Girl"..a bit naughty and sexy. This is one of those cds you can put in the player, and enjoy from the first song to the the last...Highly recommended!

Brilliant - Fun, insightful, dark,
By
This review is from: Jann Arden (Audio CD)
Jann Arden, a master poet and musician, has accomplished something few muscians can muster: she has laid her soul bare to the world against a melting pop of pure radio pop, hopefully melancholy, and joyful bliss. From the synth-pop brilliance of the first single, "Wher No One Knows Me", to the dark, haunting story of "How Good Things Are", Arden has captured all the elements of real life and daily existence in twelve perfect little vignettes. Standout tracks include the eerie, Bjork-reminscent "Life Is Sweet", the guitar-ladden prayer "Calling God", the ambient, heart-wrenching "Beautiful Pain", and the simple, yet joyous "A Perfect Day". For long-time Arden enthusiasts, there is an updated version of Arden's timeless classic, "I Would Die For You", featuring none other than Canadian chanteuse Sarah McLachlan on duet vocals.

Back to Jann!!,

Yes!! After several recent missteps, Jann Arden has given us a CD we can own, savor and sing along with. She is still not a very happy person. From the beginning of her recording career, she's sung about deep misery (boy, that first bad experience really must have crushed her!!). And despite what she may say about this record, there's still plenty of anger and hurt here. But there's a fabulous melodic pop to the uptempo songs and a quiet, singular beauty to the acoustic numbers. I was just listening to "Happy?" and thinking about the incredible lyrics and sad but intense delivery in that CD. Although I think the last couple of songs on this new one miss the center of the target, this CD may actually be better. In my opinion, "Living Under June" is still her standard, but on the first several listenings, she is back and sounds great. What a voice! Fine production. Of special note is the duet with Sarah. Wow, girls, you've made an interesting song sound unforgettable. Please, Jann, come to Ohio soon and share your great musical gifts with us.

It's remarkable Jann Arden has come up with such a fresh album. Her writing, singing and performing skills have not staled as the years have passed but rather she keeps ascending to new heights. This album is like a splash of sparkling water--refreshing, clean and cooling. The songs are instantly infectious, the lyrics deep and meaningful, the melodies insinuating and hypnotic. And of course the singing is flavorful and
singular. Jann's major attribute is intelligence, enhanced by high standards, courageous honesty and unending originality. This is an album for listening over and over and over. Don't miss it!

Time after time, Jann Arden has proven herself to be an exceptional artist with excellent writing skills. This album is no exception. Jann is so comical in interviews and she has a wonderful, witty personality which made me love her music even more. She deserves all the success she has received. Anyone looking for great music by a genuinely talented, AND Canadian, artist should pick up a copy of Jann Arden's new album. You will not be disappointed.

5-star disc, one star demerit for frustrating, unreadable album packaging,
By John Jenks (West Hollywood, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Jann Arden (Audio CD)
Truth be told, I was so indifferent to Jann Arden's last couple of discs that I nearly sat this one out. Which would have been a pity because as many armchair Amazon reviewers have pointed out here, Jann's latest is one of her most consistently satisfying since Living Under June. But the CD booklet is about the most user UNfriendly design for listeners such as myself who like to scan the lines of verse while the disc is playing. Lines of text in all different directions, running this way and that. Printed in colors that bleed into the colors of the page. (In other words, not enough contrast in colors.) I mean, why even BOTHER to reprint the lyrics if they're going to be unreadable? Why even BOTHER to reprint the lyrics if they're going to appear in a microscopic point size? (And I'm in my thirties with perfect vision!) The front cover is beautiful, but whose idea was it to list the song titles (the so-called "stacking order") in a circle on the back cover? Easy reference? Nope.
Here's a tip for anyone still reading this: I bought this from Canada's Amazon (Amazon.ca) because it's a whole lot cheaper. When you convert the Canadian dollar to the greenback, it came out to a little less than 10 bucks, versus 28 here. Even with shipping, it was cheaper at Amazon.ca than buying it as an import. So I guess Canada's good for more than just cheap prescription drugs! |
