My mother-in-law bought this machine for my 7-year-old daughter. We wanted a smaller machine for her to learn on, but all the 'toy' machines are such awful junk we went for this one. I'm so glad we did! I'm an avid seamstress and have an old-school pfaff, but I have to admit I've been stealing her machine more and more frequentlym especially when I go out to sew!

Pros:
It's lightweight, making it perfect for travelling, for pulling out for a quick repair, and for young learners.

It's super easy to use. My daughter learned quickly how to sew with it and works on her own now.

It's SO cute. Adorable. Why can they make full sized machines this darling?

It's very good quality and sews like a dream. The sound is uniform and smooth and the stitch quality is excellent. No complaints from us and we've had it over a year!

Cons:
This doesn't do 'fancy' stuff. If you want a machine with fancy stitch capabilities and plan on becoming a professional seamstress, this could not be your only machine. But I still think this is an excellent second machine for an expert seamstress.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase and recommend it to anyone.

As for the review that said it only has one speed, I haven't found this to be any different from any other machine I've used. If you push the pedal in all the way, it goes fast. Just a light push results in a slow speed.

I've had this machine for three months now and I love it. It's easy to understand and use. It's not an intimidating machine at all. I'm an adult beginning sewer, learning by reading books and practicing. I find it's perfect for my needs. I don't foresee myself becoming a sewing maniac but I like being creative and just making or repairing things. As a result, a machine like this totally fits my needs and the adorable Hello Kitty design helps make the work even more fun.

Update 02/20/2009:
I turned into a sewing maniac after all! As a result, I discovered the limitations of this machine and eventually bought a full-size Janome electronic sewing machine that I'm very happy with.

Here are the limitations of the Hello Kitty version:
- there is no speed control. Like a golf cart, you either go or you're at stop. It helps to have better control otherwise you might not be sewing where you want to sew.
- the 4-step buttonholer was frustrating to use and I could never get consistent looking buttonholes.

Those were really the only two things that bothered me. I still have this machine because I love the looks of it, but I consider it a backup.

We have 2 of these little machines. My 9 year old has been sewing with hers for 2 years, my 7 year old about a year. We haven't had any issues what so ever. I'm actually looking into getting another one for my littlest girls birthday this summer. I have a rather old Brother machine that I love, but when it was in need of a repair I used my daughters machine for about 7 months. It worked just fine. It has all the basic stitches, the tension is great and my daughters can do their own bobbins. They even figured out how to thread the machine on their own. I would recommend this machine to any little girl (or big girl) who wants to learn how to sew.

First of all, my review is based on the fact that I am an very inexperienced sewer. I just needed a small, real (not toy) sewing machine to make small crafts such as pillows, making linings for my felted, knitted purses, repairing hems, and making other small projects. This model fit the bill!!! What caught my attention the most was the "Hello Kitty". Yes, as immature is it may sound, that is what sold me.

NOTE: The speed of this machine is adjustable however, it is manual. There is no control knob on the machine that sets the speed so you have to rely on the foot pedal. The foot pedal is tapered like the gas pedal in a car. If you step on it hard, you go faster and if you step on it slightly, it goes slower. The foot pedal on this machine works in a similar fashion. For new sewers, I recommend stepping only on the narrow end (the narrow end is ribbed) and depressing lightly. After some practice, you will find the speed that is most comfortable for you. The speed is also important depending on the weight of the fabric. Satins and silks may take a lower speed while denims and upholstery fabric can withstand faster speeds without compromising precise stitching.

This machine meets all my needs. The manual is VERY well written and it is easy to thread and wind bobbins. The metal bobbins and needles are standard which can be found at any craft or fabric store. The machine is VERY easy to operate and the stitches are easy to adjust.

I WANT TO ADDRESS A SIMPLE SOLUTION TO JAMMED BOBBINS AND THREADS "BUNCHING UP": MAKE SURE THAT YOUR "HOOK RACE RING HOLDERS" ARE IN THE CLOSED POSITION http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B0012PTMAG/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_3?

This machine was amazing. It was easy to use (when using my mom's expensive fancy machine, I thought I was a horrible seamstress because I kept breaking things). I just sewed a kilt for my husband using this machine. The kilt instructions said, "your machine simply may not do it. Unless you have an industrial machine, it almost for sure won't." (was referring to sewing through nine layers of canvas when attaching waistband to overlapping pleats). This hello Kitty sewing machine sewed through nine layers of canvas with no hesitation. Hello kitty machine exceeded expectations.
