These wonderful recordings have something of a checkered history. They were made in the early 1980s by Starker and the Orchestra of Santa Fe, near the end of that orchestra's existence. Disputes over contracts and conductors, and some byzantine record label politics, caused them to languish for a number of years, unreleased.

Fortunately, we can now at last hear the results of those sessions. Along with more familiar works by Boccherini and Vivaldi, we have the charming cello concerto of Jean-Baptiste-Aime Janson (a contemporary of Boccherini and Haydn), the A major concerto of C.P.E. Bach, and the transcription by Bazelaire of Couperin's "Pieces en Concert". The performances show Starker at the absolute peak of his powers as both a cellist and interpreter. He handles even the most demanding passage work with ease, and invests all five works with a lucidity and coherence that makes them enjoyable to hear again and again.

Highly recommended to anyone who loves cello music, particularly from the 18th century.
