Book Description

0312226764 978-0312226763 January 2, 2000
Jansenism, and the theology of Cornelius Jansen, powerfully infused French political life from the mid-17th century to the revolution 150 years later. It influenced the Enlightenment, the development of French constitutional thinking, the destruction of the Jesuits, and the modernization of the Catholic Church. This book explains why Jansenism was so important, recreates the religious and intellectual world which fostered it, and examines the critical issues which led to the French Revolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars William Doyle on Jansenism, September 1, 2007

This review is from: Jansenism: Catholic Resistance to Authority from the Reformation to the French Revolution (Studies in European History) (Paperback)
This is an excellent short but detailed introduction to Jansenism. In only 90 pages of narrative Doyle deals with the various manifestations of Jansenism in Europe, not merely France and the Low Countries, with many gems of detail not easily found elsewhere, such as biographical data on French Appellant Bishops. First class and highly recommended, and an encouragement to further research.
