4.0 out of 5 stars Is It Over?, April 7, 2008
This review is from: The January Girl (Paperback)
The January Girl by Goldie Taylor is the story of Thandywaye Malone. Thandy, as she is known, is a stunningly beautiful woman with one child and a life filled with overcoming bad situations. She left home at fifteen after being beaten severely by her father. Thandy discovers she is pregnant by twenty-five year old Monty, who marries her and moves her to Atlanta. For a few years she lives in the lap of luxury, only to discover that Monty is a drug kingpin. Once Monty is arrested and sentenced to three life sentences, she and her daughter, Montana, live a life of poverty. However, Thandy's natural smarts and ambitions cause her to work hard to provide for herself and her daughter and she even graduates from law school. Everything seems to be on the right path; she falls in love with the very handsome surgeon, Dr. Jackson Gabrielle, who takes care of her better than anyone ever has. Life seems almost too good to be true and considering all that Thandy has been through it probably is.

Jack Gabrielle is married to Etienne and father to two sons. For years he has devoted himself to his very successful practice and a string of affairs. Etienne is married to her love for vodka. Once Jack meets Thandy he falls head over heels in love with her, giving her everything a woman could want, except marriage. Thandy allows Jack to stay in her life for ten years until she discovers Jack is cheating on her and Etienne. She immediately leaves Atlanta, giving him back his million-dollar condo and goes off to forge her own future as president of a large investment company in Chicago. Jack, however, is bound and determined to get her back no matter what. There are, of course, people, and situations standing in the way of his plans. Most importantly, is Thandy willing to allow Jack back in her life?

The January Girl is well-told story filled with lies, secrets and acts of desperation. We are allowed to see love, hate, while feeling for the characters and their lives. I recommend this novel to all readers who enjoy fast-paced novels with just enough romance and drama.

I have to tell you that I have gotten to know Goldie a little because I saw an interview she did that touched my soul. I started chatting with her and found out more about her and her family and she is one of the most AMAZING people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. This book along with her first book "In My Fathers House" are PROFOUND. I will not give anything away because you need to be touched by this artists writing in order to really get what I would tell you anyway. They are both in my TOP 5 Books and I am looking forward to more from this AMAZING "LADY". She is a single mother who given the chance will revolutionize our ways of life. She really is an amazing author and the book is really GREAT and a MUST read. PLEASE BUY THESE and don't buy one because you are going to want to give them as gifts too. I have numerous of this book, however I am awaiting my copy of "In My Fathers House". GREAT GIFT FOR ANYTHING!!!! GREAT WOMAN AND ARTIST!!!!

This review is from: The January Girl (Paperback)
Despite a past filled with poverty and heartache, Thandy manages to create a successful life for herself and her daughter. However, a lifetime of secrets threatens to destroy what she loves most. Author, Goldie Taylor slowly and tantalizingly introduces the characters as she artfully develops the story line in this contemporary novel about redemption and forgiveness. Overall, "The January Girl" is worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Choices We Make, September 14, 2008
This review is from: The January Girl (Paperback)
This novel is about a woman, Thandy, and her quest to find love and happiness. Growing up, Thandy had a troubled childhood with her parents and found love with Monty. Monty cared for Thandy in the ways she wanted but she was unaware of the dangerous lifestyle he led. Life was becoming lovely for Thandy and Monty until local authorities got involved.

Thandy decided to change her life for herself and her daughter for good. She went to college and became a successful lawyer. Now she's met another guy, Jackson Gabrielle, who is a successful surgeon who seemingly fills Thandy's empty heart with expensive gifts and love. As Thandy discovers the truth about Jackson , she will be forced to decide between happiness and her dignity. Which one will she choose?

Goldie Taylor's "The January Girl" was a very good and exciting read. It started out slow with many details but turned out to have a stunning ending. I recommend this book to all females in relationships.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Storyteller, August 2, 2008
This review is from: The January Girl (Paperback)
In the January Girl Goldie Taylor weaves a gripping story of love, obsession and the complexities that make up most relationships. Central to this story are the arrogant, talented and rich surgeon Jack Gabrielle and his long term mistress Thandy Malone. Jack felt that he didn't need anyone until he nearly lost Thandy and learned what love and need really were. As Thandy is the "other woman" as a reader I didn't expect to like her, but she proved to be more complex than just some chick after another woman's husband. Her character is intelligent, surprisingly loyal and driven. You feel that the spoiled and arrogant Jack doesn't deserve her. This author's writing style was wonderful and kept my attention throughout. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because at the end the pace seemd to pick up too quickly and the book ended somewhat too tidily, although tragically. Did true love win out? You will have to read and decide for yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) Love Persistently, July 22, 2008

This review is from: The January Girl (Paperback)
Thandywaye Malone (Thandy) is a successful business woman with a wonderful daughter, but in a relationship she sees no future in. The man she loves, Dr. Jackson Gabrielle, is married and has been for the ten years they have been together. He is one of the most successful neurosurgeons in the country, with two sons and a wife who disconnected from the relationship, with a bottle, years ago. However, Jackson has a problem being faithful, to anyone and his lack of being trustworthy is the act that may lose him his wife and his mistress.

THE JANUARY GIRL explores the thought processes of the integral characters as they discover their true selves and move toward a more satisfying future, as well as right their past wrongs. It is a unique tale of love and Taylor gives readers an opportunity to delve into the characters to ensure understanding. The short chapters made for a faster pace, which made this a quick read, but there were several subplots that although important, were not always fully explained which made it feel like the story was missing something. The story has a good moral message with an unpredictable ending.

This review is from: The January Girl (Paperback)
The story of a woman involved with a married man for 10 years, this book caught my attention when I read the back cover and the main character was described as an Investment Executive. I hoped that it would be an "adult" novel and it did not disappoint. The characters were complex and the plot advanced at a great pace. I read it in one day enthralled in the lives of Thandy and Jack. The discussion of the book among a mixture of married and single friends has been enlightening and enhanced by the questions at the back of the book. Great read; looking forward to reading more by the author!
