Gold Fever, October 11, 2011
This review is from: Janus Island (Hardcover)
Ben Powers writes for television. Except the kind of shows he writes for, like Playhouse 90, have gone off the air replaced by mindless sitcoms. He owes the IRS plenty and a brutal divorce settlement has left him impoverished. How in the world will he ever be able to carve out any kind of future for himself and his new lady love?
As an act of desperation, Ben agrees to return to his childhood home on the Florida keys to help his friend Nort Clay, an eccentric millionaire, hunt for sunken treasure. What starts off as an interesting search for lost Spanish gold rapidly devolves into an increasingly destructive wild goose chase as friend Nort's actions become more and more psychotic with each passing day.
Janus Island by Sloan Wilson, author of The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, is a well written tale of self discovery. Ben Powers learns a great deal about himself and the parents he thought he knew even as he finds out that second acts in life are indeed possible. A thought provoking novel with many memorable scenes and dialogue that rings true.
