4.0 out of 5 stars Collection of source materials, October 10, 2010
The editor presents us with the question whether Japan in the period 1931-1945 should be considered militaristic, fascist, or something else (Japanist?). The book presents source writings on this question, including translations of government documents, opinions by Soviet political scientists, and writings by Japanese right wing leaders like Kita Ikki. One must take into consideration the year of its publication, when there was much less available in English on Japanese history. For the current researcher there is not much here of interest that cannot be found in "Sources of Japanese Tradition". Comments by Soviets seem now dated and scholastic (not scholarly!). Don't spend too much money on this very thin volume.
