Book Description

September 13, 2005
Yuka Katsuragi, a beautiful TV news reporter, has attracted the affections of a Yakuza thug, Katsuji Yashima, who travels with his brother all the way to Spain to find her, only to have his affections rebuffed by Yuka. A terrible earthquake hits, and Katsuji, his brother, and Yuka, along with four high-schoolers in Spain on a field-trip, all fall deep underground. While trapped below the surface, they encounter a mysterious old woman who reveals to them prophecies that the wealthy nation of Japan will meet the same demise as the once prosperous city of Carthage. Katsuji and the others insult the old woman, who then sends them to see the world of the future with their own eyes, a future of desolation and death...

5.0 out of 5 stars I DO NOT understand why anyone could give this less that 5 stars., February 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Japan (Paperback)
Story progression was fast, intense, and left me wanting much more at the end. The artwork of Miura does not disappoint, and the joint story telling of Buronson and Miura is no letdown either. This has much less to do with personal philosophy like Berserk and more to do with a general philosophy of true patriotism. For those who are unaware of the definition of patriotism I'll define it for you here. "The concept of patriotism is linked to enlightenment values concerning a common good, which transcends national, social, and economic boundaries. Patriotism, thus, does not require someone to support their leader's actions or a nation's policies in all circumstances, and there wouldn't necessarily be a contradiction between being a patriot and revolting against king and country." That is what I mean by True patriotism being a theme in this book, as most people, even myself at one time, believed patriotism to be blind and deaf nationalism. Regardless this book was amazing I can only hope there is more in this series but my research seems to point to this being a one shot book. I certainly will keep and eye out for more. I should also point out I am not normally a fan of comics/manga/anime because 80% of whats out there is poop. With that said this book was 99 cents US + shipping and was well worth that price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe the Future, July 20, 2008
This review is from: Japan (Paperback)
Japan is brutal slap on the face to those in favor of globalization(me included, it is the way to go). Miura and Buronson depict a future of misery and cruelty into which they drop a group of people of today with all the contemporary attitudes and weaknesses. They quickly become as much victims as everybody else. Only a Guts lookalike possesses the strength to try and succeed at changing the world.

It is a good comic, chilling in its implications, but the authors, while showing how far Japanese can fall, still idealize Japan and what it represents. They may be patriots in a way but anybody with any idea of Japan(past and present)knows they are going too far. Good comic but I prefer Berserk.

4.0 out of 5 stars don't listen to that other guy., January 15, 2008
This review is from: Japan (Paperback)
the guy above me is being alittle closed minded, this book is not berserk. thats the point if you want more berserk, than keep reading berserk. this is something different, this book is a gem if you understand whats trying to be said.
